In 2021, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in the Russian nitrates market, when its value increased by 19% to $X. Over the period under review, consumption, however, showed a pronounced slump. Nitrates consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Overall, exports saw a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 863% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
In value terms, nitrates exports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports posted buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 526% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
Exports by Country
Australia (X tons), Costa Rica (X tons) and the Netherlands (X tons) were the main destinations of nitrates exports from Russia, with a combined 49% share of total exports. Kazakhstan, Italy, Brazil, Belarus, Poland, the United States, Turkmenistan, the UK and Ecuador lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 38%.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Italy (with a CAGR of +3,333.9%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Australia ($X) remains the key foreign market for nitrates (excluding those of potassium) exports from Russia, comprising 24% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Costa Rica ($X), with an 11% share of total exports. It was followed by the Netherlands, with a 9.8% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to Australia amounted to +68.7%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Costa Rica (+962.3% per year) and the Netherlands (+17.6% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The average nitrates export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 6.3% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a abrupt setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when the average export price increased by 6.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Turkmenistan ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Kazakhstan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Australia (+17.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Imports into the Russian Federation
In 2021, the amount of nitrates (excluding those of potassium) imported into Russia contracted remarkably to X tons, waning by -40.9% compared with 2020 figures. Overall, imports continue to indicate a deep reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 215% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, nitrates imports declined significantly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports faced a abrupt descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 120% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Norway (X tons) constituted the largest nitrates supplier to Russia, accounting for a 36% share of total imports. Moreover, nitrates imports from Norway exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Ukraine (X tons), twofold. Belgium (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 15% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from Norway totaled -23.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Ukraine (-10.7% per year) and Belgium (+70.9% per year).
In value terms, the largest nitrates suppliers to Russia were Belgium ($X), China ($X) and Norway ($X), with a combined 66% share of total imports.
Among the main suppliers, Belgium, with a CAGR of +52.5%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the average nitrates import price amounted to $X per ton, jumping by 39% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import price indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +6.3% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the average import price increased by 88%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2021, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Belgium ($X per ton), while the price for Ukraine ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by India (+15.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
