Nitrogen Market Size in the Russian Federation

In 2021, after two years of decline, there was growth in the Russian nitrogen market, when its value increased by 1.3% to $X. Overall, consumption showed a pronounced contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 5.5% against the previous year. Nitrogen consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, nitrogen production expanded slightly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production showed a abrupt downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the production volume increased by 6.3%. Nitrogen production peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.

Exports from the Russian Federation

In 2021, the amount of nitrogen exported from Russia skyrocketed to X cubic meters, jumping by 18% against the year before. Overall, exports showed prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by 196%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X cubic meters in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, nitrogen exports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports posted a pronounced expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when exports increased by 191%. The exports peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Kazakhstan (X cubic meters) was the main destination for nitrogen exports from Russia, with a 79% share of total exports. Moreover, nitrogen exports to Kazakhstan exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Belarus (X cubic meters), sixfold.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Kazakhstan totaled +43.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Belarus (+80.1% per year) and Ukraine (+113.1% per year).

In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X), Ukraine ($X) and Belarus ($X) constituted the largest markets for nitrogen exported from Russia worldwide, together accounting for 97% of total exports.

Ukraine, with a CAGR of +130.1%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the average nitrogen export price amounted to $X per cubic meter, increasing by 2.3% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a noticeable decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the average export price increased by 86% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum at $X per cubic meter in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Ukraine ($X per cubic meter), while the average price for exports to Kazakhstan ($X per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Ukraine (+8.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Nitrogen Imports

Imports into the Russian Federation

Nitrogen imports into Russia soared to X cubic meters in 2021, rising by 169% compared with the year before. Over the period under review, imports recorded a perceptible increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 516%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X cubic meters. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, nitrogen imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, imports recorded strong growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 86% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Finland (X cubic meters) constituted the largest supplier of nitrogen to Russia, with a 55% share of total imports. Moreover, nitrogen imports from Finland exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, South Korea (X cubic meters), fourfold. Singapore (X cubic meters) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 14% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from Finland stood at +46.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: South Korea (+15.0% per year) and Singapore (+8.7% per year).

In value terms, the largest nitrogen suppliers to Russia were Poland ($X), Estonia ($X) and Finland ($X), with a combined 67% share of total imports. These countries were followed by South Korea, the United States, Singapore, Belarus and Latvia, which together accounted for a further 25%.

Belarus, with a CAGR of +45.0%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the average nitrogen import price amounted to $X per cubic meter, dropping by -54.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the average import price increased by 578% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per cubic meter in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Poland ($X per cubic meter), while the price for Singapore ($X per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.
