In value terms, graphite non-electrical articles exports declined dramatically to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 158%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2020, and then reduced remarkably in the following year.

Kazakhstan (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons) and China (X tons) were the main destinations of graphite non-electrical articles exports from Russia, together accounting for 75% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in the Czech Republic (with a CAGR of +108.4%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, China ($X), the Czech Republic ($X) and Belarus ($X) constituted the largest markets for graphite non-electrical articles exported from Russia worldwide, together accounting for 72% of total exports.

Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Kazakhstan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Estonia (+12.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into the Russian Federation

In 2021, overseas purchases of non-electrical articles of graphite or other carbon decreased by -24.7% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after three years of growth. In general, imports, however, showed buoyant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 76%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, graphite non-electrical articles imports rose modestly to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, recorded a strong expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 33% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Hungary (X tons) constituted the largest graphite non-electrical articles supplier to Russia, with a 40% share of total imports. Moreover, graphite non-electrical articles imports from Hungary exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, China (X tons), twofold. Germany (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with an 8.6% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from Hungary stood at +44.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (+5.4% per year) and Germany (-1.5% per year).

In value terms, the largest graphite non-electrical articles suppliers to Russia were Belarus ($X), Hungary ($X) and Germany ($X), together accounting for 49% of total imports. These countries were followed by Italy, China, France, Denmark and Turkey, which together accounted for a further 28%.

Denmark, with a CAGR of +52.3%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the average graphite non-electrical articles import price amounted to $X per ton, rising by 38% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
