The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when exports increased by 874% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2020, and then reduced remarkably in the following year.
In value terms, potato exports shrank rapidly to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, saw a buoyant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 637%. The exports peaked at $X in 2020, and then fell dramatically in the following year.
Exports by Country
Ukraine (X tons) was the main destination for potato exports from Russia, with a 64% share of total exports. Moreover, potato exports to Ukraine exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Azerbaijan (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Belarus (X tons), with a 7.2% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Ukraine totaled +245.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Azerbaijan (+2.4% per year) and Belarus (+53.5% per year).
In value terms, Ukraine ($X) remains the key foreign market for potato exports from Russia, comprising 61% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Belarus ($X), with an 11% share of total exports. It was followed by Azerbaijan, with an 11% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Ukraine totaled +222.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Belarus (+30.9% per year) and Azerbaijan (-8.8% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the average potato export price amounted to $X per ton, surging by 22% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a deep reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 25%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Kazakhstan ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Azerbaijan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Uzbekistan (+2.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.
Potato Imports
Imports into the Russian Federation
Potato imports into Russia surged to X tons in 2021, jumping by 73% compared with 2020. In general, imports continue to indicate a tangible expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by 96% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, potato imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a perceptible increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 105%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Egypt (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of potato to Russia, with a 52% share of total imports. Moreover, potato imports from Egypt exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Azerbaijan (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Pakistan (X tons), with a 9.1% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Egypt amounted to +15.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Azerbaijan (+4.3% per year) and Pakistan (+9.9% per year).
In value terms, Egypt ($X) constituted the largest supplier of potato to Russia, comprising 49% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Azerbaijan ($X), with a 17% share of total imports. It was followed by Pakistan, with an 8.1% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from Egypt amounted to +14.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Azerbaijan (+6.2% per year) and Pakistan (+11.4% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the average potato import price amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 2.4% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.2%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when the average import price increased by 16% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while the price for Belarus ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Belarus (+11.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
