The Russian prepared binders market rose sharply to $X in 2021, with an increase of 10% against the previous year. Overall, the total consumption indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +9.4% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production decreased by -11.1% against 2019 indices. In 2021, overseas shipments of prepared binders for foundry moulds or cores increased by 128% to X tons, rising for the fifth consecutive year after four years of decline. Overall, exports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, prepared binders exports surged to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, saw a noticeable downturn. The exports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Belarus (X tons) was the main destination for prepared binders exports from Russia, accounting for a 81% share of total exports. Moreover, prepared binders exports to Belarus exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Ukraine (X tons), sevenfold.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Belarus totaled +3.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Ukraine (-12.6% per year) and Kazakhstan (+3.9% per year).

In value terms, Belarus ($X) remains the key foreign market for prepared binders for foundry moulds or cores exports from Russia, comprising 77% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Ukraine ($X), with a 16% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to Belarus was relatively modest. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Ukraine (-10.6% per year) and Kazakhstan (-3.1% per year).

Imports into the Russian Federation

In 2021, purchases abroad of prepared binders for foundry moulds or cores was finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a tangible increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 54%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, prepared binders imports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, total imports indicated notable growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 48%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, China (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of prepared binders to Russia, accounting for a 58% share of total imports. Moreover, prepared binders imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Germany (X tons), threefold. The Czech Republic (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 7.5% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from China totaled +10.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Germany (+20.8% per year) and the Czech Republic (+47.8% per year).

In value terms, the largest prepared binders suppliers to Russia were China ($X), Germany ($X) and the Czech Republic ($X), with a combined 81% share of total imports.

The Czech Republic, with a CAGR of +48.4%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The average prepared binders import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 25% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while the price for China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Spain (+9.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
