Sausage Market Size in the Russian Federation

In 2021, the Russian sausage market increased by 3.8% to $X, rising for the fifth consecutive year after four years of decline. In general, consumption continues to indicate a pronounced decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when the market value increased by 4.5%. Sausage consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

For the third year in a row, Russia recorded growth in overseas shipments of sausages and similar products of meat, which increased by 26% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, total exports indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.5% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +70.1% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 30%. The exports peaked in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in the near future.

In value terms, sausage exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, total exports indicated a temperate increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +115.2% against 2016 indices. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Kazakhstan (X tons) was the main destination for sausage exports from Russia, accounting for a 74% share of total exports. Moreover, sausage exports to Kazakhstan exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Ukraine (X tons), fivefold. Azerbaijan (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 7.9% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Kazakhstan stood at +3.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Ukraine (+405.5% per year) and Azerbaijan (+35.9% per year).

In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) remains the key foreign market for sausages and similar products of meat exports from Russia, comprising 69% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Ukraine ($X), with an 18% share of total exports. It was followed by Azerbaijan, with an 8.5% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to Kazakhstan stood at +1.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Ukraine (+388.7% per year) and Azerbaijan (+24.9% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the average sausage export price amounted to $X per ton, surging by 8.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a pronounced descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the average export price increased by 12%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Georgia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Kazakhstan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Kazakhstan (-2.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

In 2021, overseas purchases of sausages and similar products of meat increased by 16% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. In general, imports, however, showed a slight reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 45%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, sausage imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a pronounced downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 52% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, Belarus (X tons) was the main supplier of sausage to Russia, accounting for a approx. 99% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from Belarus totaled +7.3%.

In value terms, Belarus ($X) constituted the largest supplier of sausages and similar products of meat to Russia.

In 2021, the average sausage import price amounted to $X per ton, surging by 9.7% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a slight curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the average import price increased by 25% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

As there is only one major supplying country, the average price level is determined by prices for Belarus.

From 2012 to 2021, the rate of growth in terms of prices for the United States amounted to +1.6% per year.
