Sulphur Market Size in the Russian Federation

After two years of growth, the Russian sulphur market decreased by -18.5% to $X in 2022. Overall, consumption, however, enjoyed strong growth. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X, and then reduced rapidly in the following year.

Moreover, sulphur exports to Brazil exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the Netherlands (X tons), sixfold. Belarus (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 7.2% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Brazil stood at +12.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the Netherlands (+32.5% per year) and Belarus (-1.0% per year).

In value terms, Brazil ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for sulphur exports from Russia, comprising 74% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the Netherlands ($X), with a 9.4% share of total exports. It was followed by Belarus, with a 7.3% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Brazil stood at +6.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the Netherlands (+26.1% per year) and Belarus (-1.1% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average sulphur export price amounted to $X per ton, dropping by -44.1% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a abrupt decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the average export price increased by 207%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then contracted rapidly in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Brazil ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 182%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, sulphur imports contracted significantly to $X in 2022. In general, imports recorded a buoyant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 269% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then declined dramatically in the following year.

In 2022, Kazakhstan (X tons) was the main supplier of sulphur to Russia, with a 93% share of total imports. Moreover, sulphur imports from Kazakhstan exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Poland (X tons), more than tenfold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Kazakhstan amounted to +12.3%.

In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) constituted the largest supplier of sulphur to Russia, comprising 83% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Poland ($X), with a 15% share of total imports.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average sulphur import price amounted to $X per ton, waning by -39.5% against the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a perceptible shrinkage.
