In 2021, the Russian synthetic filament tow market increased by 11% to $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In general, consumption, however, recorded a perceptible decrease. Synthetic filament tow consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

For the sixth year in a row, Russia recorded growth in shipments abroad of synthetic filament tow and staple fibers, not carded or combed, which increased by 22% to X tons in 2021. Overall, exports recorded a significant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 123%. The exports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, synthetic filament tow exports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports posted a prominent expansion. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Belarus (X tons) was the main destination for synthetic filament tow exports from Russia, with a 55% share of total exports. Moreover, synthetic filament tow exports to Belarus exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Kazakhstan (X tons), twofold. Lithuania (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with an 8.3% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Belarus stood at +47.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Kazakhstan (+44.4% per year) and Lithuania (+72.8% per year).

In value terms, Belarus ($X) remains the key foreign market for synthetic filament tow exports from Russia, comprising 58% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Kazakhstan ($X), with a 19% share of total exports. It was followed by Lithuania, with a 6.5% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to Belarus totaled +42.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Kazakhstan (+36.6% per year) and Lithuania (+54.7% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the average synthetic filament tow export price amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 43% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a deep reduction. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat for the major export markets. In 2021, the countries with the highest prices were Belarus ($X per ton) and Ukraine ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Lithuania ($X per ton) and Kazakhstan ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Italy (-3.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into the Russian Federation

In 2021, imports of synthetic filament tow and staple fibers, not carded or combed into Russia rose sharply to X tons, surging by 8.1% on 2020. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 16%. Imports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, synthetic filament tow imports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, total imports indicated modest growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Belarus (X tons), China (X tons) and South Korea (X tons) were the main suppliers of synthetic filament tow imports to Russia, with a combined 65% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Uzbekistan, India, Turkey, Vietnam and Taiwan (Chinese), which together accounted for a further 30%.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Uzbekistan (with a CAGR of +103.3%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest synthetic filament tow suppliers to Russia were Belarus ($X), China ($X) and South Korea ($X), together accounting for 65% of total imports. Uzbekistan, India, Turkey, Taiwan (Chinese) and Vietnam lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 25%.

Among the main suppliers, Uzbekistan, with a CAGR of +98.9%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average synthetic filament tow import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 30% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a slight contraction. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Taiwan (Chinese) ($X per ton), while the price for Vietnam ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Taiwan (Chinese) (+1.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
