Container Market Size in the Russian Federation
In 2022, the Russian container market increased by 1% to $X, rising for the sixth consecutive year after two years of decline. Over the period under review, consumption, however, showed a slight curtailment. In 2022, shipments abroad of tanks, casks, drums, cans, boxes and similar containers increased by 1.8% to X units, rising for the third year in a row after two years of decline. In general, exports posted a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 101%. The exports peaked at X units in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, container exports reduced to $X in 2022. Overall, exports continue to indicate prominent growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 92% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Kazakhstan (X units) was the main destination for container exports from Russia, with a 37% share of total exports. Moreover, container exports to Kazakhstan exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Azerbaijan (X units), threefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Uzbekistan (X units), with a 13% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Kazakhstan totaled +17.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Azerbaijan (+35.1% per year) and Uzbekistan (+28.3% per year).
In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) remains the key foreign market for tanks, casks, drums, cans, boxes and similar containers exports from Russia, comprising 38% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Uzbekistan ($X), with a 16% share of total exports. It was followed by Azerbaijan, with a 14% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Kazakhstan amounted to +12.7%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Uzbekistan (+51.9% per year) and Azerbaijan (+35.8% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the average container export price amounted to $X per unit, shrinking by -8% against the previous year. In general, the export price showed a noticeable setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the average export price increased by 13%. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Kyrgyzstan ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to Cyprus ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Uzbekistan (+18.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into the Russian Federation
In 2022, container imports into Russia fell sharply to X units, which is down by -16.9% on 2021. Overall, imports saw a perceptible slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 76% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X units. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Germany, Hungary, Belarus, Egypt, the Czech Republic, Saudi Arabia, Poland, Serbia, Estonia and Sweden lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 54%.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Saudi Arabia (with a CAGR of +23,852.1%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest container suppliers to Russia were Germany ($X), China ($X) and Turkey ($X), together comprising 42% of total imports. Hungary, Ukraine, Egypt, Belarus, Saudi Arabia, the Czech Republic, Serbia, Poland, Estonia and Sweden lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 49%.
In terms of the main suppliers, Saudi Arabia, with a CAGR of +26,638.8%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The average container import price stood at $X per unit in 2022, shrinking by -3.5% against the previous year. In general, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the average import price increased by 11% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per unit), while the price for Belarus ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Saudi Arabia (+11.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
