Tea Market Size in the Russian Federation

The Russian tea market reduced to $X in 2022, with a decrease of -2.2% against the previous year. This figure reflects the total revenues of producers and importers (excluding logistics costs, retail marketing costs, and retailers' margins, which will be included in the final consumer price). Over the period under review, consumption recorded a noticeable descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 4.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Exports from the Russian Federation

In 2022, shipments abroad of tea decreased by -3.2% to X tons for the first time since 2015, thus ending a six-year rising trend. Overall, exports, however, saw a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 37%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2021, and then contracted slightly in the following year.

In value terms, tea exports shrank modestly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, total exports indicated a notable expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +69.5% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when exports increased by 28% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2021, and then declined slightly in the following year.

Exports by Country

Belarus (X tons), Kazakhstan (X tons) and Ukraine (X tons) were the main destinations of tea exports from Russia, together accounting for 65% of total exports. Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Israel and Lithuania lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 21%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Israel (with a CAGR of +42.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Belarus ($X), Kazakhstan ($X) and Ukraine ($X) were the largest markets for tea exported from Russia worldwide, with a combined 64% share of total exports. Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Israel and Lithuania lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 19%.

Among the main countries of destination, Israel, with a CAGR of +31.9%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average tea export price amounted to $X per ton, approximately mirroring the previous year. In general, the export price showed a pronounced decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 9.5% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Ukraine ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Israel ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Ukraine (+0.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into the Russian Federation

In 2022, after two years of growth, there was decline in supplies from abroad of tea, when their volume decreased by -1% to X tons. Over the period under review, imports saw a slight reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 2.7% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, tea imports fell slightly to $X in 2022. In general, imports continue to indicate a perceptible contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 5.8%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Sri Lanka (X tons), India (X tons) and Kenya (X tons) were the main suppliers of tea imports to Russia, together accounting for 65% of total imports. China, Vietnam, Argentina, Tanzania, Indonesia and the United Arab Emirates lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 30%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Argentina (with a CAGR of +16.4%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Sri Lanka ($X), India ($X) and Kenya ($X) appeared to be the largest tea suppliers to Russia, together comprising 67% of total imports. China, Vietnam, the United Arab Emirates, Tanzania, Indonesia and Argentina lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 25%.

Argentina, with a CAGR of +13.2%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The average tea import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, shrinking by -1.8% against the previous year. In general, the import price showed a perceptible decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 8.1%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton), while the price for Argentina ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Vietnam (+1.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
