Sportswear Market Size in the Russian Federation

The Russian sportswear market expanded markedly to $X in 2021, picking up by 14% against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, recorded a mild curtailment. Sportswear consumption peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

For the third consecutive year, Russia recorded growth in overseas shipments of track suits, ski suits and swimwear, which increased by 34% to X units in 2021. Overall, exports enjoyed a resilient increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when exports increased by 88% against the previous year. The exports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, sportswear exports surged to $X in 2021. In general, exports continue to indicate resilient growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 81% against the previous year. The exports peaked in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

Belarus (X units), Kazakhstan (X units) and Ukraine (X units) were the main destinations of sportswear exports from Russia, together accounting for 77% of total exports. Croatia, the United States, Armenia and China lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 15%.

The average sportswear export price stood at $X per unit in 2021, rising by 2% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a mild decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 28%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per unit. From 2014 to 2021, the average export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was China ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to Croatia ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

In 2021, the amount of track suits, ski suits and swimwear imported into Russia expanded significantly to X units, increasing by 11% against 2020 figures. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a mild contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 18%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, sportswear imports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a mild decline. In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of track suits, ski suits and swimwear to Russia, comprising 42% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Vietnam ($X), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by Cambodia, with a 6.5% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from China totaled -3.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Vietnam (+9.5% per year) and Cambodia (+24.1% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The average sportswear import price stood at $X per unit in 2021, with an increase of 8.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 12%. The import price peaked at $X per unit in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Cambodia ($X per unit), while the price for Kyrgyzstan ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
