Uncooked Pasta Market Size in the Russian Federation

The Russian uncooked pasta market expanded sharply to $X in 2021, picking up by 5.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption continues to indicate a mild contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 8.5%. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, uncooked pasta production expanded remarkably to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, showed a slight shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 12% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production attained the peak level at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, overseas shipments of uncooked pasta decreased by -0.4% to X tons for the first time since 2013, thus ending a seven-year rising trend. Over the period under review, total exports indicated a temperate increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +104.4% against 2013 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by 19% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2020, and then dropped modestly in the following year.

In value terms, uncooked pasta exports surged to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a pronounced expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 35%. The exports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

Exports by Country

Belarus (X tons), Kazakhstan (X tons) and Uzbekistan (X tons) were the main destinations of uncooked pasta exports from Russia, together accounting for 60% of total exports. These countries were followed by Mongolia, Armenia, Georgia, Ukraine, Moldova, Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan and Tajikistan, which together accounted for a further 35%.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Kyrgyzstan (with a CAGR of +48.0%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for uncooked pasta exported from Russia were Belarus ($X), Kazakhstan ($X) and Uzbekistan ($X), together accounting for 65% of total exports. Moldova, Ukraine, Georgia, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, Armenia, Turkmenistan and Tajikistan lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 29%.

Kyrgyzstan, with a CAGR of +41.7%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the average uncooked pasta export price amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 17% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Uzbekistan ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Turkmenistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Belarus (+1.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

In 2021, purchases abroad of uncooked pasta decreased by -17.2% to X tons, falling for the third year in a row after two years of growth. In general, imports saw a pronounced reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 30%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, uncooked pasta imports totaled $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports recorded a mild decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 39% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Italy (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of uncooked pasta to Russia, accounting for a 48% share of total imports. Moreover, uncooked pasta imports from Italy exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Kazakhstan (X tons), threefold. China (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 17% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from Italy totaled -7.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Kazakhstan (+25.7% per year) and China (+6.5% per year).

In value terms, the largest uncooked pasta suppliers to Russia were Italy ($X), China ($X) and Kazakhstan ($X), together comprising 87% of total imports. These countries were followed by Vietnam, Germany and Kyrgyzstan, which together accounted for a further 8.2%.

Among the main suppliers, Kyrgyzstan, with a CAGR of +44.4%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the average uncooked pasta import price amounted to $X per ton, growing by 21% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.4%. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while the price for Kyrgyzstan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
