Market Size for Vegetables (Preserved, Frozen) in the Russian Federation
The Russian preserved and frozen vegetable market shrank to $X in 2022, dropping by -11.9% against the previous year. This figure reflects the total revenues of producers and importers (excluding logistics costs, retail marketing costs, and retailers' margins, which will be included in the final consumer price). In general, consumption, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, shipments abroad of vegetables (preserved, frozen) decreased by -16.8% to X tons for the first time since 2015, thus ending a six-year rising trend. Over the period under review, exports, however, posted a significant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when exports increased by 387%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2021, and then shrank remarkably in the following year.
In value terms, preserved and frozen vegetable exports fell sharply to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, recorded a significant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when exports increased by 320% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2021, and then plummeted in the following year.
Exports by Country
Belarus (X tons), Kazakhstan (X tons) and Tajikistan (X tons) were the main destinations of preserved and frozen vegetable exports from Russia, with a combined 68% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Tajikistan (with a CAGR of +117.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest markets for preserved and frozen vegetable exported from Russia were Belarus ($X), Kazakhstan ($X) and Uzbekistan ($X), together comprising 71% of total exports. Tajikistan, Ukraine, Azerbaijan and Kyrgyzstan lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 28%.
Tajikistan, with a CAGR of +129.8%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the average preserved and frozen vegetable export price amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -4.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price saw a noticeable setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 15% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the average export prices failed to regain momentum.
Average prices varied somewhat for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the highest price was recorded for prices to Kyrgyzstan ($X per ton) and Belarus ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Ukraine ($X per ton) and Tajikistan ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Tajikistan (+5.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.
Imports of Vegetables (Preserved, Frozen)
Imports into the Russian Federation
In 2022, imports of vegetables (preserved, frozen) into Russia declined to X tons, waning by -11.4% compared with the year before. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 29%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, preserved and frozen vegetable imports fell to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 34%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
The Netherlands (X tons), France (X tons) and Germany (X tons) were the main suppliers of preserved and frozen vegetable imports to Russia, with a combined 79% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for France (with a CAGR of +50.2%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the Netherlands ($X), France ($X) and Germany ($X) constituted the largest preserved and frozen vegetable suppliers to Russia, together accounting for 79% of total imports.
Among the main suppliers, France, with a CAGR of +51.0%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the average preserved and frozen vegetable import price amounted to $X per ton, standing approx. at the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 7.6% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then declined in the following year.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the highest price was recorded for prices from Belgium ($X per ton) and France ($X per ton), while the price for Poland ($X per ton) and Germany ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
