Whey Market Size in the Russian Federation
After two years of decline, the Russian whey market increased by 13% to $X in 2022. In general, consumption, however, faced a drastic downturn. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 246% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then shrank notably in the following year.
In value terms, whey exports reduced remarkably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a significant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 345% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2021, and then dropped markedly in the following year.
Exports by Country
Kazakhstan (X tons) was the main destination for whey exports from Russia, accounting for a 68% share of total exports. Moreover, whey exports to Kazakhstan exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Tajikistan (X tons), fourfold. The third position in this ranking was held by Ukraine (X tons), with a 5.3% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Kazakhstan stood at +54.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Tajikistan (+97.9% per year) and Ukraine (+24.1% per year).
In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) remains the key foreign market for whey exports from Russia, comprising 74% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Tajikistan ($X), with an 11% share of total exports. It was followed by Ukraine, with a 5.4% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Kazakhstan stood at +49.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Tajikistan (+107.3% per year) and Ukraine (+26.7% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The average whey export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, declining by -5.7% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 43% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Kazakhstan ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Belarus ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Tajikistan (+4.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.
Whey Imports
Imports into the Russian Federation
In 2022, supplies from abroad of whey was finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, imports, however, recorded a abrupt curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 35% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, whey imports shrank to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a deep slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 53%. Imports peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Belarus (X tons) was the main whey supplier to Russia, with a 97% share of total imports. It was followed by Argentina (X tons), with a 3.2% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Belarus totaled -9.4%.
In value terms, Belarus ($X) constituted the largest supplier of whey to Russia, comprising 90% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Argentina ($X), with a 9.1% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Belarus stood at -7.2%.
Import Prices by Country
The average whey import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, which is down by -10.3% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the average import price increased by 54% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Argentina ($X per ton), while the price for Belarus amounted to $X per ton.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by France (+9.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
