Whisky Market Size in the Russian Federation
In 2022, the Russian whisky market decreased by -6.8% to $X for the first time since 2016, thus ending a five-year rising trend. Over the period under review, consumption, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Whisky consumption peaked at $X in 2021, and then declined in the following year.
Whisky Exports
Exports from the Russian Federation
After three years of growth, shipments abroad of whisky decreased by -66.6% to X litres in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate significant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 385% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X litres in 2021, and then fell markedly in the following year.
In value terms, whisky exports fell rapidly to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, enjoyed significant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 554%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2021, and then reduced notably in the following year.
Exports by Country
China (X litres) was the main destination for whisky exports from Russia, accounting for a 59% share of total exports. Moreover, whisky exports to China exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Macao SAR (X litres), twofold. Cambodia (X litres) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 12% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to China totaled +268.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Macao SAR (0.0% per year) and Cambodia (+73.0% per year).
In value terms, the largest markets for whisky exported from Russia were China ($X), Macao SAR ($X) and Cambodia ($X), together comprising 96% of total exports.
Among the main countries of destination, China, with a CAGR of +411.8%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The average whisky export price stood at $X per litre in 2022, growing by 73% against the previous year. In general, the export price recorded a resilient expansion. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Macao SAR ($X per litre), while the average price for exports to Cambodia ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Cambodia (+76.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Whisky Imports
Imports into the Russian Federation
In 2022, purchases abroad of whisky decreased by -5.8% to X litres for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. In general, imports, however, recorded resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 109%. Imports peaked at X litres in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.
In value terms, whisky imports contracted to $X in 2022. Overall, imports continue to indicate a slight setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 51%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
The UK (X litres), Armenia (X litres) and Latvia (X litres) were the main suppliers of whisky imports to Russia, together comprising 50% of total imports. These countries were followed by Spain, Azerbaijan, Lithuania, Italy, Germany and Estonia, which together accounted for a further 13%.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Azerbaijan (with a CAGR of +3,011.3%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Latvia ($X) constituted the largest supplier of whisky to Russia, comprising 22% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the UK ($X), with a 7.9% share of total imports. It was followed by Lithuania, with a 3.9% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Latvia stood at -9.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the UK (-1.4% per year) and Lithuania (+14.8% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the average whisky import price amounted to $X per litre, declining by -2.4% against the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a abrupt shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when the average import price increased by 5.9%. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per litre in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Latvia ($X per litre), while the price for Armenia ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Lithuania (+4.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
