Over the period under review, production of reached the maximum level at $X in 2020, and then fell modestly in the following year.

In 2021, shipments abroad of wood chips, parts, residues, pellets and other agglomerates decreased by -1% to X cubic meters, falling for the second consecutive year after eight years of growth. In general, total exports indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.1% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports decreased by -24.4% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when exports increased by 24% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X cubic meters. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of the exports of remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, exports of wood chips, parts, residues, pellets and other agglomerates declined slightly to $X in 2021. Overall, total exports indicated a temperate expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports decreased by -23.3% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 25%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of the exports of remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Finland (X cubic meters) was the main destination for exports of wood chips, parts, residues, pellets and other agglomerates from Russia, with a 27% share of total exports. Moreover, exports of wood chips, parts, residues, pellets and other agglomerates to Finland exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the Netherlands (X cubic meters), sixfold. The third position in this ranking was held by Belgium (X cubic meters), with a 4.3% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Finland amounted to -4.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the Netherlands (+27.5% per year) and Belgium (+58.3% per year).
In value terms, Finland ($X) remains the key foreign market for wood chips, parts, residues, pellets and other agglomerates exports from Russia, comprising 17% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by the Netherlands ($X), with an 8% share of total exports. It was followed by Denmark, with a 5.6% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to Finland amounted to -8.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the Netherlands (+27.0% per year) and Denmark (-11.3% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the average export price for wood chips, parts, residues, pellets and other agglomerates amounted to $X per thousand cubic meters, remaining stable against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a slight setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the average export price increased by 3.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum at $X per thousand cubic meters in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per thousand cubic meters), while the average price for exports to Finland ($X per thousand cubic meters) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to South Korea (+1.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Imports into the Russian Federation
In 2021, overseas purchases of wood chips, parts, residues, pellets and other agglomerates were finally on the rise to reach X cubic meters for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In general, imports, however, showed a abrupt decrease. Over the period under review, imports of reached the peak figure at X cubic meters in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, imports of wood chips, parts, residues, pellets and other agglomerates surged to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when imports increased by 23%. Imports peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Germany (X cubic meters) constituted the largest wood chips, parts, residues, pellets and other agglomerates supplier to Russia, accounting for a 58% share of total imports. Moreover, imports of wood chips, parts, residues, pellets and other agglomerates from Germany exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Ukraine (X cubic meters), fivefold. Poland (X cubic meters) ranked third in terms of total imports with an 11% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from Germany stood at -7.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Ukraine (+28.7% per year) and Poland (-4.3% per year).
In value terms, Germany ($X) constituted the largest supplier of wood chips, parts, residues, pellets and other agglomerates to Russia, comprising 58% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by France ($X), with a 19% share of total imports. It was followed by Poland, with a 6.1% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from Germany totaled -1.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: France (+8.9% per year) and Poland (-1.0% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The average import price for wood chips, parts, residues, pellets and other agglomerates stood at $X per cubic meter in 2021, picking up by 4.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import price indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.6% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, import price for wood chips, parts, residues, pellets and other agglomerates increased by +65.0% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the average import price increased by 19%. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per cubic meter), while the price for Ukraine ($X per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Estonia (+26.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
