Abrasives Market Size in SADC
The SADC abrasives market skyrocketed to $X in 2021, rising by 15% against the previous year. The total consumption indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.6% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, consumption decreased by -13.1% against 2019 indices. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, abrasives production surged to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production saw a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the production volume increased by 45%. Over the period under review, production attained the maximum level at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, production remained at a lower figure.

Exports in SADC
After two years of decline, shipments abroad of abrasives (natural) increased by 68% to X tons in 2021. Overall, exports posted significant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 1,158% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, abrasives exports surged to $X in 2021. In general, exports enjoyed significant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 280%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
The biggest shipments were from South Africa (X tons), together resulting at 100% of total export.
South Africa was also the fastest-growing in terms of the abrasives (natural) exports, with a CAGR of +63.5% from 2012 to 2021. South Africa (+35 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) also remains the largest abrasives supplier in SADC.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa stood at +54.3%.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, rising by 1.8% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a deep downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 an increase of 242% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2017 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for South Africa.
From 2012 to 2021, the rate of growth in terms of prices for South Africa amounted to -5.6% per year.
Abrasives Imports
Imports in SADC
In 2021, the amount of abrasives (natural) imported in SADC declined slightly to X tons, remaining relatively unchanged against 2020. Total imports indicated notable growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +43.3% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 58% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, abrasives imports rose markedly to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 29% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2017; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.
Imports by Country
Lesotho represented the largest importer of abrasives (natural) in SADC, with the volume of imports finishing at X tons, which was approx. 69% of total imports in 2021. Mauritius (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 14% share, followed by Angola (6.1%). The following importers - South Africa (X tons) and Madagascar (X tons) - each accounted for a 5.9% share of total imports.
Lesotho was also the fastest-growing in terms of the abrasives (natural) imports, with a CAGR of +14.8% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Mauritius (+8.6%) and Madagascar (+1.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Angola (-8.2%) and South Africa (-21.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Lesotho (+45 p.p.) and Mauritius (+5.9 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Angola and South Africa saw its share reduced by -10% and -32.4% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Lesotho ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported abrasives (natural) in SADC, comprising 43% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Angola ($X), with a 20% share of total imports. It was followed by Mauritius, with a 12% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Lesotho totaled +22.5%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Angola (+6.8% per year) and Mauritius (+7.1% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 13% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the import price increased by 50% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Angola ($X per ton), while Madagascar ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Angola (+16.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
