Market Size for Activated Natural Mineral Products in SADC

After two years of growth, the SADC activated natural mineral products market decreased by -6.1% to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, consumption, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Production of Activated Natural Mineral Products in SADC

In value terms, activated natural mineral products production reached $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, showed a deep setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the production volume increased by 17% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, after eight years of decline, there was significant growth in shipments abroad of activated natural mineral products, when their volume increased by 480% to X tons. Overall, exports, however, recorded a precipitous slump. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, activated natural mineral products exports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a abrupt slump. Exports by Country

Mozambique dominates exports structure, amounting to X tons, which was near 98% of total exports in 2021. South Africa (X tons) took a little share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to activated natural mineral products exports from Mozambique stood at -20.5%. South Africa (-8.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. South Africa (+1.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Mozambique saw its share reduced by -1.6% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, Mozambique ($X) remains the largest activated natural mineral products supplier in SADC, comprising 93% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by South Africa ($X), with a 6.8% share of total exports.

In Mozambique, activated natural mineral products exports shrank by an average annual rate of -18.4% over the period from 2012-2021.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -12.9% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.1%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 17%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then fell in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Mozambique stood at $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+2.9%).

Imports of Activated Natural Mineral Products

In 2021, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in supplies from abroad of activated natural mineral products, when their volume decreased by -8.5% to X tons. Total imports indicated a resilient increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.1% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +13.0% against 2018 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 44%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, activated natural mineral products imports rose rapidly to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when imports increased by 22% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2021, South Africa (X tons) was the key importer of activated natural mineral products, comprising 53% of total imports. Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons) took a 15% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Angola (8.1%), Madagascar (7.1%) and Tanzania (4.7%). Zimbabwe (X tons) and Mozambique (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to activated natural mineral products imports into South Africa stood at +4.4%. At the same time, Mozambique (+20.4%), Madagascar (+17.5%), Democratic Republic of the Congo (+9.9%), Zimbabwe (+8.1%) and Angola (+4.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mozambique emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +20.4% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Tanzania (-5.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Democratic Republic of the Congo, Madagascar and Mozambique increased by +4.9, +4.5 and +1.9 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported activated natural mineral products in SADC, comprising 55% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by Madagascar, with a 6.2% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa amounted to +2.1%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Democratic Republic of the Congo (+10.3% per year) and Madagascar (+18.0% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, growing by 17% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a mild decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 30%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Zimbabwe ($X per ton), while Angola ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tanzania (+2.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
