In 2021, the SADC agricultural and forestry tractor market decreased by -2% to $X, falling for the second year in a row after three years of growth. Exports in SADC
For the fourth year in a row, SADC recorded growth in overseas shipments of agricultural and forestry tractors, which increased by 63% to X units in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a perceptible decrease. The volume of export peaked at X units in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, agricultural and forestry tractor exports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, saw a abrupt contraction. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
South Africa dominates exports structure, amounting to X units, which was approx. 87% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Mauritius (X units), committing a 5.4% share of total exports. Zambia (X units) took a relatively small share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to agricultural and forestry tractor exports from South Africa stood at -2.5%. At the same time, Mauritius (+19.0%) and Zambia (+15.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mauritius emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +19.0% from 2012-2021. While the share of Mauritius (+4.5 p.p.) and Zambia (+1.5 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of South Africa (-2.1 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest agricultural and forestry tractor supplier in SADC, comprising 85% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Mauritius ($X), with a 6.7% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa totaled -6.7%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Mauritius (+34.3% per year) and Zambia (+14.7% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per unit, with a decrease of -4.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price saw a pronounced slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the export price increased by 22%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per unit. From 2016 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Zambia ($X per unit), while South Africa ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mauritius (+12.7%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
Imports of Agricultural And Forestry Tractors
Imports in SADC
In 2021, agricultural and forestry tractor imports in SADC contracted rapidly to X units, waning by -36% on 2020 figures. Overall, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 89%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X units in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, agricultural and forestry tractor imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, imports showed a pronounced shrinkage. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
South Africa was the main importing country with an import of about X units, which amounted to 56% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Tanzania (X units), Zimbabwe (X units) and Mozambique (X units), together constituting a 27% share of total imports. The following importers - Botswana (X units), Zambia (X units) and Angola (X units) - each accounted for a 12% share of total imports.
South Africa experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of agricultural and forestry tractors. At the same time, Zimbabwe (+6.2%) and Botswana (+2.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Zimbabwe emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +6.2% from 2012-2021. Tanzania experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Mozambique (-1.5%), Zambia (-5.0%) and Angola (-8.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of South Africa (+5.6 p.p.) and Zimbabwe (+5 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Zambia (-1.9 p.p.) and Angola (-3.9 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported agricultural and forestry tractors in SADC, comprising 73% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Tanzania ($X), with a 6.1% share of total imports. It was followed by Zimbabwe, with a 5.8% share.
In South Africa, agricultural and forestry tractor imports shrank by an average annual rate of -2.7% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Tanzania (+1.5% per year) and Zimbabwe (+2.4% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in SADC stood at $X per unit in 2021, jumping by 135% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a pronounced setback. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per unit), while Botswana ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
