Agricultural Appliance Market Size in SADC

In 2021, the SADC agricultural appliance market increased by 23% to $X, rising for the second year in a row after seven years of decline. In general, consumption, however, continues to indicate a deep downturn. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Agricultural Appliance Production in SADC

In value terms, agricultural appliance production skyrocketed to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production enjoyed a significant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the production volume increased by 1,042%. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2021, production growth remained at a lower figure.

Exports in SADC

In 2021, shipments abroad of agricultural appliances was finally on the rise to reach X units for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The volume of export peaked at X units in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, agricultural appliance exports surged to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated a resilient increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +9.6% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

South Africa represented the key exporter of agricultural appliances in SADC, with the volume of exports reaching X units, which was approx. 85% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Mozambique (X units), mixing up an 11% share of total exports.

South Africa experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of agricultural appliances. At the same time, Mozambique (+86.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mozambique emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +86.0% from 2012-2021. While the share of Mozambique (+11 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of South Africa (-8.1 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest agricultural appliance supplier in SADC, comprising 99% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Mozambique ($X), with a 0.2% share of total exports.

In South Africa, agricultural appliance exports increased at an average annual rate of +9.8% over the period from 2012-2021.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in SADC stood at $X per unit in 2021, shrinking by -30.1% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, posted resilient growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 an increase of 56% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per unit in 2020, and then fell markedly in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per unit), while Mozambique totaled $X per unit.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+10.0%).

Agricultural Appliance Imports

Imports in SADC

In 2021, purchases abroad of agricultural appliances increased by 10% to X units, rising for the second consecutive year after seven years of decline. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a precipitous descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when imports increased by 24% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, agricultural appliance imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, showed a noticeable reduction. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Zimbabwe was the main importing country with an import of around X units, which reached 45% of total imports. South Africa (X units) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 23% share, followed by Angola (16%). Tanzania (X units), Zambia (X units), Mozambique (X units) and Malawi (X units) took a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Zimbabwe (with a CAGR of +8.4%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Zimbabwe ($X), Angola ($X) and South Africa ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together accounting for 77% of total imports.

Zimbabwe, with a CAGR of +13.9%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per unit, picking up by 36% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price enjoyed a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 an increase of 61% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Mozambique ($X per unit), while South Africa ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
