Exports in SADC

In 2021, the amount of air conditioning machines exported in SADC shrank significantly to X units, which is down by -19.1% against 2020 figures. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a sharp downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 84% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X units in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, air conditioning machine exports fell notably to $X in 2021. Overall, exports showed a abrupt shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 9.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

South Africa prevails in exports structure, recording X units, which was near 93% of total exports in 2021. Namibia (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to air conditioning machine exports from South Africa stood at -22.2%. Namibia (-9.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Namibia (+1.9 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of South Africa (-5.3 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest air conditioning machine supplier in SADC, comprising 92% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Namibia ($X), with a 2.9% share of total exports.

In South Africa, air conditioning machine exports decreased by an average annual rate of -7.2% over the period from 2012-2021.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per unit, dropping by -3.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed strong growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the export price increased by 462%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per unit in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Namibia ($X per unit), while South Africa totaled $X per unit.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+19.2%).

Imports in SADC

For the third consecutive year, SADC recorded growth in supplies from abroad of air conditioning machines, which increased by 8.5% to X units in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, faced a precipitous curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 4,045%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X units. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, air conditioning machine imports rose rapidly to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, recorded a pronounced decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 18%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

South Africa prevails in imports structure, amounting to X units, which was near 51% of total imports in 2021. Angola (X units) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Democratic Republic of the Congo (X units), Mozambique (X units) and Tanzania (X units). All these countries together held approx. 32% share of total imports. The following importers - Botswana (X units) and Mauritius (X units) - each resulted at an 8.2% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to air conditioning machine imports into South Africa stood at -27.9%. At the same time, Democratic Republic of the Congo (+17.2%), Mozambique (+13.7%) and Tanzania (+2.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Democratic Republic of the Congo emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +17.2% from 2012-2021. Botswana and Mauritius experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Angola (-11.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Democratic Republic of the Congo (+8.6 p.p.), Mozambique (+7.3 p.p.), Angola (+6.2 p.p.), Tanzania (+6.1 p.p.), Botswana (+3.9 p.p.) and Mauritius (+3.5 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of South Africa (-43.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported air conditioning machines in SADC, comprising 49% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Angola ($X), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by Democratic Republic of the Congo, with an 8% share.

In South Africa, air conditioning machine imports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Angola (-13.7% per year) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (+13.0% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per unit, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year. Overall, the import price posted a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 an increase of 2,128%. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Mauritius ($X per unit), while Botswana ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+37.7%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
