The SADC aircraft launching gear market was finally on the rise to reach $X in 2021, after two years of decline. In general, consumption, however, showed a drastic downturn. In 2021, South Africa (X kg), distantly followed by Zambia (X kg), Botswana (X kg), Zimbabwe (X kg), Tanzania (X kg) and Namibia (X kg) were the key exporters of aircraft launching gear, deck-arrestor or similar gear and parts thereof, together committing 100% of total exports.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Namibia ($X per ton), while South Africa ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Namibia (+22.9%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

In 2021, overseas purchases of aircraft launching gear, deck-arrestor or similar gear and parts thereof increased by 24% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after three years of decline. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a sharp setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 211% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, aircraft launching gear imports shrank markedly to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, faced a dramatic slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 481%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Zimbabwe (X tons) and South Africa (X tons) represented roughly 65% of total imports in 2021. Botswana (X kg) held the next position in the ranking, followed by Tanzania (X kg) and Malawi (X kg). All these countries together held approx. 23% share of total imports. The following importers - Mozambique (X kg), Swaziland (X kg) and Mauritius (X kg) - together made up 8.1% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Swaziland (with a CAGR of +53.2%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest aircraft launching gear importing markets in SADC were Zimbabwe ($X), South Africa ($X) and Tanzania ($X), together accounting for 73% of total imports. Malawi, Botswana, Mauritius, Mozambique and Swaziland lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 23%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Swaziland, with a CAGR of +52.8%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2021, falling by -70% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 297%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2020, and then contracted significantly in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Tanzania ($X per ton), while Swaziland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mauritius (+4.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
