Exports in SADC
In 2022, the amount of airplanes and other aircraft exported in SADC reduced notably to X units, waning by -18% on 2021 figures. Over the period under review, exports faced a deep setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by 268%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X units. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, aircraft exports dropped markedly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports showed a abrupt shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 142% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
South Africa was the largest exporting country with an export of about X units, which reached 64% of total exports. Botswana (X units) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Zimbabwe (X units). All these countries together took near 28% share of total exports. Namibia (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.
South Africa experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of airplanes and other aircraft. At the same time, Zimbabwe (+18.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Zimbabwe emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +18.2% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Namibia (-1.3%) and Botswana (-23.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia increased by +47, +7.2 and +2.2 percentage points, respectively.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest aircraft supplier in SADC, comprising 81% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Botswana ($X), with a 9.8% share of total exports. It was followed by Namibia, with a 3% share.
In South Africa, aircraft exports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Botswana (-21.2% per year) and Namibia (-2.1% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per unit, growing by 3.6% against the previous year. In general, the export price saw a strong increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 an increase of 112%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per unit in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per unit), while Zimbabwe ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Zimbabwe (+2.6%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in SADC
In 2022, the amount of airplanes and other aircraft imported in SADC surged to X units, picking up by 181% compared with the previous year. Overall, imports, however, saw a abrupt decrease. The volume of import peaked at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, aircraft imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, faced a abrupt shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 179% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
South Africa was the key importing country with an import of around X units, which accounted for 68% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Malawi (X units) and Tanzania (X units), together comprising an 18% share of total imports. Botswana (X units), Zimbabwe (X units), Madagascar (X units) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to aircraft imports into South Africa stood at -20.8%. At the same time, Malawi (+54.1%), Democratic Republic of the Congo (+20.3%), Madagascar (+15.2%) and Zimbabwe (+14.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Malawi emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +54.1% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Tanzania (-11.0%) and Botswana (-23.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Malawi (+12 p.p.), Tanzania (+3.7 p.p.), Zimbabwe (+2.6 p.p.) and Madagascar (+2.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Botswana and South Africa saw its share reduced by -3.2% and -21.7% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported airplanes and other aircraft in SADC, comprising 63% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Botswana ($X), with a 13% share of total imports. It was followed by Zimbabwe, with a 7.5% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa amounted to -11.4%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Botswana (-20.3% per year) and Zimbabwe (+18.4% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in SADC stood at $X per unit in 2022, declining by -2.5% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a noticeable increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 394%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per unit. From 2017 to 2022, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Botswana ($X per unit), while Malawi ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
