Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, aluminium alloy tube exports shrank to $X in 2022. Overall, exports showed a perceptible descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 19% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, South Africa (X tons) was the key exporter of aluminium alloy tubes and pipes in SADC, making up 100% of total export.

South Africa experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of aluminium alloy tubes and pipes. The shares of the largest exporters remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) also remains the largest aluminium alloy tube supplier in SADC.

The export price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2022, flattening at the previous year. Overall, the export price continues to indicate a perceptible reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the export price increased by 9.4%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for South Africa.

In 2022, imports of aluminium alloy tubes and pipes in SADC soared to X tons, increasing by 25% compared with the previous year's figure. Total imports indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +51.9% against 2020 indices. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2019; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.

In value terms, aluminium alloy tube imports surged to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 20%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2022, South Africa (X tons) was the major importer of aluminium alloy tubes and pipes, committing 75% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons), comprising an 11% share of total imports. Angola (X tons), Namibia (X tons) and Tanzania (X tons) took a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to aluminium alloy tube imports into South Africa stood at +6.0%. At the same time, Namibia (+16.4%), Democratic Republic of the Congo (+10.2%), Tanzania (+8.4%) and Angola (+2.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Namibia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +16.4% from 2012-2022. While the share of Democratic Republic of the Congo (+3.8 p.p.), Namibia (+1.9 p.p.) and South Africa (+1.9 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported aluminium alloy tubes and pipes in SADC, comprising 81% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X), with a 6.1% share of total imports. It was followed by Angola, with a 5.1% share.

In South Africa, aluminium alloy tube imports expanded at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Democratic Republic of the Congo (-0.6% per year) and Angola (+1.3% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, falling by -3.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a noticeable decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 4.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Angola ($X per ton), while Tanzania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Namibia (+1.1%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
