In 2021, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in overseas shipments of aluminium bars, rods and profiles, when their volume increased by 26% to X tons. In general, exports, however, recorded a abrupt slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 90% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, aluminium bar exports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a abrupt slump. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Mozambique dominates exports structure, reaching X tons, which was approx. 93% of total exports in 2021. Mauritius (X tons) and South Africa (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from Mozambique decreased at an average annual rate of -10.5% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Mauritius (+29.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mauritius emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +29.5% from 2012-2021. By contrast, South Africa (-3.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Mauritius (+3.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Mozambique saw its share reduced by -5.2% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Mozambique ($X) remains the largest aluminium bar supplier in SADC, comprising 92% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Mauritius ($X), with a 3.7% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Mozambique totaled -16.2%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Mauritius (+21.9% per year) and South Africa (-3.9% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 18% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a deep reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the export price increased by 141% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Mozambique ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (-0.0%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in SADC

In 2021, imports of aluminium bars, rods and profiles in SADC skyrocketed to X tons, rising by 16% on the previous year's figure. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 27%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in years to come.

In value terms, aluminium bar imports surged to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed in certain years. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

South Africa was the main importing country with an import of about X tons, which resulted at 61% of total imports. Mauritius (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Tanzania (X tons). All these countries together held near 20% share of total imports. The following importers - Angola (X tons), Madagascar (X tons), Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons) and Mozambique (X tons) - together made up 12% of total imports.

Imports into South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +11.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Democratic Republic of the Congo (+15.8%), Madagascar (+8.7%), Tanzania (+5.4%) and Mauritius (+1.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Democratic Republic of the Congo emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +15.8% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Mozambique (-2.1%) and Angola (-14.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. South Africa (+25 p.p.) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (+1.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Mozambique, Mauritius and Angola saw its share reduced by -2%, -4.2% and -22% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported aluminium bars, rods and profiles in SADC, comprising 59% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Mauritius ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by Angola, with a 6.4% share.

In South Africa, aluminium bar imports expanded at an average annual rate of +8.9% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Mauritius (+1.6% per year) and Angola (-14.9% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 14% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a noticeable decline. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Angola ($X per ton), while Tanzania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Madagascar (+0.8%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
