Market Size for Aluminium Casks, Drums, Cans, Boxes and Similar Containers in SADC

The SADC market for aluminium casks, drums, cans, boxes and similar containers fell slightly to $X in 2022, waning by -4.4% against the previous year. The total consumption indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption increased by +8.2% against 2020 indices. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, production of aluminium casks, drums, cans, boxes and similar containers declined to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production increased by +5.8% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 33% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in SADC

In 2022, the amount of aluminium casks, drums, cans, boxes and similar containers exported in SADC fell to X units, dropping by -11% compared with the year before. Over the period under review, exports, however, posted a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by 158% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports of attained the maximum at X units in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, exports of aluminium casks, drums, cans, boxes and similar containers reduced remarkably to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a resilient increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 152%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2021, and then contracted notably in the following year.

Exports by Country

The shipments of the one major exporters of aluminium casks, drums, cans, boxes and similar containers, namely South Africa, represented more than two-thirds of total export.

South Africa was also the fastest-growing in terms of the aluminium casks, drums, cans, boxes and similar containers exports, with a CAGR of +19.1% from 2012 to 2022. The shares of the largest exporters remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) also remains the largest aluminium cask, drum, can, box and similar container supplier in SADC.

In South Africa, exports of aluminium casks, drums, cans, boxes and similar containers increased at an average annual rate of +20.1% over the period from 2012-2022.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in SADC stood at $X per unit in 2022, dropping by -27.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 an increase of 110%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per unit. From 2015 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for South Africa.

From 2012 to 2022, the rate of growth in terms of prices for South Africa amounted to +0.8% per year.

Imports in SADC

For the third consecutive year, SADC recorded growth in supplies from abroad of aluminium casks, drums, cans, boxes and similar containers, which increased by 7% to X units in 2022. Overall, imports recorded a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 99%. The volume of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in the near future.

In value terms, imports of aluminium casks, drums, cans, boxes and similar containers expanded sharply to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports saw a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 100% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Mozambique (X units), distantly followed by Namibia (X units), Zambia (X units), South Africa (X units), Zimbabwe (X units), Botswana (X units), Mauritius (X units) and Tanzania (X units) were the main importers of aluminium casks, drums, cans, boxes and similar containers, together constituting 94% of total imports.

Imports into Mozambique increased at an average annual rate of +55.6% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Zambia (+87.8%), Zimbabwe (+62.8%), Botswana (+52.8%), Tanzania (+19.9%), Mauritius (+9.8%) and South Africa (+5.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Zambia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +87.8% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Namibia (-2.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Mozambique (+24 p.p.), Zambia (+12 p.p.), Zimbabwe (+10 p.p.), Botswana (+9.5 p.p.) and Tanzania (+2.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Mauritius, South Africa and Namibia saw its share reduced by -2.6%, -9.8% and -39% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, the largest aluminium cask, drum, can, box and similar container importing markets in SADC were South Africa ($X), Mauritius ($X) and Mozambique ($X), with a combined 46% share of total imports. Zambia, Botswana, Tanzania, Zimbabwe and Namibia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 47%.

Zambia, with a CAGR of +74.9%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in SADC stood at $X per unit in 2022, surging by 6% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a pronounced decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 an increase of 8.1% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per unit. From 2016 to 2022, the import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Tanzania ($X per unit), while Namibia ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tanzania (+13.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
