The level of production peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

Ammonium sulphate exports fell markedly to X tons in 2022, declining by -15.4% compared with the previous year's figure. Overall, exports, however, enjoyed a resilient expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 258% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, ammonium sulphate exports expanded markedly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 211%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

Exports by Country

Madagascar was the major exporter of ammonium sulphate in SADC, with the volume of exports amounting to X tons, which was approx. 58% of total exports in 2022. South Africa (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Mozambique (X tons). All these countries together held near 41% share of total exports.

Exports from Madagascar increased at an average annual rate of +21.8% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Mozambique (+28.8%) and South Africa (+9.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mozambique emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +28.8% from 2012-2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Madagascar and Mozambique increased by +19 and +11 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, South Africa ($X), Madagascar ($X) and Mozambique ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, together comprising 98% of total exports.

Mozambique, with a CAGR of +24.7%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, growing by 35% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Madagascar ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+5.1%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

In 2022, imports of ammonium sulphate in SADC surged to X tons, growing by 51% against the previous year. Overall, imports enjoyed a buoyant increase. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, ammonium sulphate imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports saw buoyant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 96%. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

South Africa (X tons) and Tanzania (X tons) prevails in imports structure, together constituting 79% of total imports. Mozambique (X tons) took the next position in the ranking, followed by Zimbabwe (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 12% share of total imports. The following importers - Angola (X tons) and Malawi (X tons) - together made up 6.6% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Zimbabwe (with a CAGR of +39.9%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported ammonium sulphate in SADC, comprising 54% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Tanzania ($X), with a 16% share of total imports. It was followed by Zimbabwe, with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa totaled +19.3%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Tanzania (+17.7% per year) and Zimbabwe (+45.3% per year).

In 2022, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 8.3% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a noticeable slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when the import price increased by 34% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
