Animal Fats Market Size in SADC
In 2021, the SADC animal fats market decreased by -19.8% to $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year rising trend. The total consumption indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.0% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, consumption increased by +24.6% against 2017 indices. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X, and then contracted notably in the following year.
Animal Fats Production in SADC
In value terms, animal fats production dropped dramatically to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.4% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production increased by +21.8% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 67% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X, and then fell markedly in the following year.
Animal Fats Exports
Exports in SADC
In 2021, shipments abroad of animal fats and oils increased by 41% to X tons, rising for the third year in a row after two years of decline. Overall, exports posted a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 79% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in the near future.
In value terms, animal fats exports surged to $X in 2021. In general, exports saw significant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 74% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
Exports by Country
In 2021, Tanzania (X tons) was the largest exporter of animal fats and oils, generating 67% of total exports. It was distantly followed by South Africa (X tons), creating a 30% share of total exports. Botswana (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Tanzania was also the fastest-growing in terms of the animal fats and oils exports, with a CAGR of +72.8% from 2012 to 2021. South Africa experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. Botswana (-2.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Tanzania (+65 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Botswana and South Africa saw its share reduced by -5% and -61.2% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.
In value terms, Tanzania ($X) remains the largest animal fats supplier in SADC, comprising 63% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by South Africa ($X), with a 30% share of total exports.
In Tanzania, animal fats exports expanded at an average annual rate of +76.5% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: South Africa (+6.5% per year) and Botswana (+12.9% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, approximately reflecting the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate a buoyant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the export price increased by 60% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Botswana ($X per ton), while Tanzania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Botswana (+15.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Animal Fats Imports
Imports in SADC
Animal fats imports surged to X tons in 2021, picking up by 112% against the previous year's figure. Overall, imports recorded a tangible expansion. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, animal fats imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports saw a resilient increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 182% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
Angola represented the largest importing country with an import of around X tons, which accounted for 64% of total imports. Comoros (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with an 11% share, followed by Malawi (5%) and Zimbabwe (4.8%). Zambia (X tons), Seychelles (X tons) and South Africa (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Angola was also the fastest-growing in terms of the animal fats and oils imports, with a CAGR of +77.5% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Zimbabwe (+6.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Malawi (-2.0%), South Africa (-3.2%), Zambia (-4.4%), Seychelles (-4.5%) and Comoros (-5.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Angola (+64 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while South Africa, Malawi, Seychelles, Zambia and Comoros saw its share reduced by -2.5%, -3.7%, -3.8%, -4.6% and -14.3% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Angola ($X), South Africa ($X) and Comoros ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together comprising 81% of total imports.
Angola, with a CAGR of +62.7%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2021, falling by -14.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, enjoyed notable growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 254% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Seychelles ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+22.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
