After four years of growth, the SADC market for anise, badian, fennel and coriander decreased by -2.4% to $X in 2022. The total consumption indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption increased by +51.5% against 2017 indices. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2021, and then shrank modestly in the following year.
Production of Anise, Badian, Fennel And Coriander in SADC
In value terms, anise, badian, fennel and coriander production dropped to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, showed a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the production volume increased by 108% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production reached the maximum level at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Tanzania (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of anise, badian, fennel and coriander production, comprising approx. 83% of total volume. Moreover, anise, badian, fennel and coriander production in Tanzania exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Zimbabwe (X tons), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was held by Malawi (X tons), with a 5.1% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume in Tanzania totaled +1.4%. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Zimbabwe (+0.7% per year) and Malawi (+1.2% per year).
In 2022, the average yield of anise, badian, fennel and coriander in SADC fell modestly to X kg per ha, remaining relatively unchanged against the year before. In general, the yield saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 6.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the anise, badian, fennel and coriander yield reached the peak level at X tons per ha in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the yield stood at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
In 2022, approx. X ha of anise, badian, fennel and coriander were harvested in SADC; leveling off at the previous year. The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the harvested area increased by 21%. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the harvested area failed to regain momentum.

Exports in SADC
In 2022, the amount of anise, badian, fennel and coriander exported in SADC fell to X tons, reducing by -5.7% compared with the previous year. Over the period under review, exports showed a abrupt decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 66% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, anise, badian, fennel and coriander exports fell to $X in 2022. Overall, exports saw a noticeable shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by 80%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
South Africa was the key exporting country with an export of around X tons, which resulted at 58% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Tanzania (X tons) and Madagascar (X tons), together mixing up a 34% share of total exports. The following exporters - Malawi (X tons) and Mauritius (X tons) - together made up 7.4% of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to anise, badian, fennel and coriander exports from South Africa stood at -3.4%. At the same time, Mauritius (+32.2%) and Madagascar (+18.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mauritius emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +32.2% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Tanzania (-13.3%) and Malawi (-19.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. South Africa (+22 p.p.), Madagascar (+8.4 p.p.) and Mauritius (+3.2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Malawi and Tanzania saw its share reduced by -12.6% and -20.9% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest anise, badian, fennel and coriander supplier in SADC, comprising 68% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Tanzania ($X), with a 14% share of total exports. It was followed by Mauritius, with an 8.7% share.
In South Africa, anise, badian, fennel and coriander exports shrank by an average annual rate of -1.9% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Tanzania (-6.4% per year) and Mauritius (+36.1% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2022, with a decrease of -8.5% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a strong expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 72%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Mauritius ($X per ton), while Malawi ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tanzania (+8.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in SADC
In 2022, after four years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas purchases of anise, badian, fennel and coriander, when their volume decreased by -26.4% to X tons. Total imports indicated perceptible growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 46% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2021, and then contracted significantly in the following year.
In value terms, anise, badian, fennel and coriander imports stood at $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +54.9% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 44%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
South Africa prevails in imports structure, amounting to X tons, which was approx. 87% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Mauritius (X tons), committing a 9.6% share of total imports.
South Africa was also the fastest-growing in terms of the anise, badian, fennel and coriander imports, with a CAGR of +5.2% from 2012 to 2022. Mauritius experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. South Africa (+9.4 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Mauritius saw its share reduced by -3.7% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported anise, badian, fennel and coriander in SADC, comprising 85% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Mauritius ($X), with a 12% share of total imports.

In 2022, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, rising by 51% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.3%. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
