The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 38% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2019; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.

In value terms, anti-freezing preparations exports surged to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +5.2% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 31%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 18% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, anti-freezing preparations imports surged to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

South Africa prevails in imports structure, finishing at X tons, which was near 58% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Mozambique (X tons) and Zambia (X tons), together mixing up a 13% share of total imports. Namibia (X tons), Botswana (X tons), Angola (X tons), Zimbabwe (X tons), Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons), Tanzania (X tons) and Madagascar (X tons) held a little share of total imports.

Imports into South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Mozambique (+19.6%), Madagascar (+7.5%), Zimbabwe (+6.8%), Democratic Republic of the Congo (+6.7%), Tanzania (+6.2%), Namibia (+4.8%), Zambia (+4.3%), Angola (+3.3%) and Botswana (+1.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mozambique emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +19.6% from 2012-2021. While the share of Mozambique (+5 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of South Africa (-7.2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported anti-freezing preparations and prepared de-icing fluids in SADC, comprising 53% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Zambia ($X), with a 7.1% share of total imports. It was followed by Namibia, with a 6.5% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa was relatively modest. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Zambia (+3.1% per year) and Namibia (+8.4% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 13% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a slight reduction. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Namibia ($X per ton), while Madagascar ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Botswana (+4.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
