In 2021, antisera exports in SADC skyrocketed to X tons, rising by 65% on 2020 figures. Overall, exports continue to indicate a resilient increase. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, antisera exports surged to $X in 2021. In general, exports recorded a significant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 72%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.
Exports by Country
In 2021, South Africa (X tons) was the key exporter of antisera and other blood fractions, creating 78% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons), generating a 16% share of total exports. Swaziland (X tons) and Seychelles (X tons) held a minor share of total exports.
Exports from South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +13.0% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Democratic Republic of the Congo (+130.7%), Seychelles (+73.7%) and Swaziland (+12.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Democratic Republic of the Congo emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +130.7% from 2012-2021. While the share of Democratic Republic of the Congo (+16 p.p.) and Seychelles (+1.6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of South Africa (-17.6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest antisera supplier in SADC, comprising 95% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Swaziland ($X), with a 1% share of total exports. It was followed by Democratic Republic of the Congo, with a 0.9% share.
In South Africa, antisera exports expanded at an average annual rate of +23.5% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Swaziland (-4.0% per year) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (+105.6% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2021, declining by -23.6% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, enjoyed a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when the export price increased by 35% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2020, and then dropped notably in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+9.3%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.
Antisera Imports
Imports in SADC
Antisera imports surged to X tons in 2021, picking up by 33% against the previous year's figure. In general, imports enjoyed a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 36% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in the near future.
In value terms, antisera imports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, imports posted a remarkable increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by 27% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
Imports by Country
South Africa dominates imports structure, amounting to X tons, which was near 73% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons) and Zambia (X tons), together mixing up a 13% share of total imports. The following importers - Mauritius (X tons), Tanzania (X tons) and Angola (X tons) - each resulted at an 8.5% share of total imports.
Imports into South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +15.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Mauritius (+67.3%), Democratic Republic of the Congo (+35.5%), Zambia (+23.8%), Angola (+19.4%) and Tanzania (+5.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mauritius emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +67.3% from 2012-2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Democratic Republic of the Congo, Mauritius and Zambia increased by +6.2, +2.9 and +2.4 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported antisera and other blood fractions in SADC, comprising 81% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Zambia ($X), with a 3.7% share of total imports. It was followed by Democratic Republic of the Congo, with a 3.2% share.
In South Africa, antisera imports expanded at an average annual rate of +11.6% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Zambia (+16.6% per year) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (+30.3% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2021, shrinking by -10.8% against the previous year. Overall, the import price showed a noticeable reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 an increase of 22% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
