The SADC apricot market declined remarkably to $X in 2022, which is down by -25.2% against the previous year. In general, consumption continues to indicate a abrupt slump. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.
Apricot Production in SADC
In value terms, apricot production shrank significantly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production recorded a noticeable descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the production volume increased by 87%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2020 to 2022, production growth failed to regain momentum.
South Africa (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of apricot production, accounting for 95% of total volume. Moreover, apricot production in South Africa exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Madagascar (X tons), more than tenfold.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume in South Africa amounted to -5.3%.
In 2022, the average apricot yield in SADC amounted to X tons per ha, flattening at the previous year. Over the period under review, the yield, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the yield increased by 0.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the apricot yield attained the peak level at X tons per ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the yield stood at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
In 2022, the total area harvested in terms of apricots production in SADC fell markedly to X ha, with a decrease of -22% compared with 2021. In general, the harvested area saw a perceptible curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the harvested area increased by 78% against the previous year. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the harvested area remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, overseas shipments of apricots increased by 31% to X tons, rising for the third consecutive year after three years of decline. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a perceptible slump. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, apricot exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a slight curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 35%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
In 2022, South Africa (X tons) was the main exporter of apricots in SADC, comprising 100% of total export.
South Africa was also the fastest-growing in terms of the apricots exports, with a CAGR of -4.7% from 2012 to 2022. The shares of the largest exporters remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) also remains the largest apricot supplier in SADC.
In South Africa, apricot exports decreased by an average annual rate of -1.6% over the period from 2012-2022.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2022, falling by -7.5% against the previous year. Export price indicated a measured increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, apricot export price decreased by -14.9% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the export price increased by 44%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2020 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for South Africa.
From 2012 to 2022, the rate of growth in terms of prices for South Africa amounted to +3.2% per year.
Apricot Imports
Imports in SADC
In 2022, overseas purchases of apricots increased by 28% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after three years of decline. In general, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 28% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, apricot imports soared to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 21%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
South Africa (X tons), Botswana (X tons), Mozambique (X tons), Namibia (X tons) and Mauritius (X tons) represented roughly 89% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Angola (X tons), generating a 5% share of total imports. Swaziland (X tons) held a little share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Mozambique (with a CAGR of +28.5%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Mauritius ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported apricots in SADC, comprising 40% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Namibia ($X), with a 20% share of total imports. It was followed by Botswana, with a 19% share.
In Mauritius, apricot imports increased at an average annual rate of +24.4% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Namibia (-2.0% per year) and Botswana (+7.2% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, dropping by -8.3% against the previous year. Import price indicated mild growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, apricot import price decreased by -22.1% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the import price increased by 55% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mauritius ($X per ton), while South Africa ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mauritius (+11.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
