Artichoke Market Size in SADC

The SADC artichoke market surged to $X in 2022, jumping by 34% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Artichoke Production in SADC

In value terms, artichoke production shrank to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 9.3%. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2018 to 2022, production growth remained at a lower figure.

South Africa (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of artichoke production, accounting for 67% of total volume. Moreover, artichoke production in South Africa exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Zimbabwe (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was held by Swaziland (X tons), with a 2.3% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume in South Africa stood at +1.1%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Zimbabwe (+0.1% per year) and Swaziland (-0.8% per year).

The average artichoke yield amounted to X tons per ha in 2022, remaining constant against the year before. Overall, the yield, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 5.2% against the previous year. As a result, the yield attained the peak level of X tons per ha. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the artichoke yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

The artichoke harvested area stood at X ha in 2022, approximately mirroring 2021. Over the period under review, the harvested area recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 4.5%. The level of harvested area peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

Artichoke Exports

Exports in SADC

In 2022, exports of artichokes in SADC contracted sharply to X tons, declining by -41.6% compared with the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed modest growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 47% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, artichoke exports reduced dramatically to $X in 2022. In general, exports showed a perceptible contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 29%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

South Africa dominates exports structure, accounting for X tons, which was approx. 93% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Swaziland (X tons), generating a 6.5% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to artichoke exports from South Africa stood at +1.0%. At the same time, Swaziland (+26.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Swaziland emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +26.2% from 2012-2022. Swaziland (+5.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest artichoke supplier in SADC, comprising 79% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Swaziland ($X), with a 21% share of total exports.

In South Africa, artichoke exports contracted by an average annual rate of -3.6% over the period from 2012-2022.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 8.2% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a noticeable downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 52% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Swaziland ($X per ton), while South Africa totaled $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Swaziland (+8.4%).

Artichoke Imports

Imports in SADC

Artichoke imports fell dramatically to X tons in 2022, with a decrease of -34.3% against 2021. In general, imports showed a deep reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 52%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, artichoke imports stood at $X in 2022. Overall, imports saw a perceptible setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 28%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Mozambique (X tons) represented the major importer of artichokes, comprising 64% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Mauritius (X tons), achieving a 12% share of total imports. The following importers - Botswana (X kg), Seychelles (X kg), Malawi (X kg), Zambia (X kg), Namibia (X kg) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (X kg) - together made up 18% of total imports.

Mozambique was also the fastest-growing in terms of the artichokes imports, with a CAGR of +34.8% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Democratic Republic of the Congo (+26.4%), Seychelles (+19.0%) and Malawi (+7.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Mauritius (-5.6%), Botswana (-6.4%), Zambia (-6.5%) and Namibia (-23.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Mozambique (+64 p.p.), Botswana (+4.1 p.p.), Seychelles (+3 p.p.), Malawi (+2.3 p.p.) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (+2.1 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Namibia saw its share reduced by -19.7% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Mozambique ($X), Mauritius ($X) and Malawi ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together accounting for 83% of total imports.

In terms of the main importing countries, Mozambique, with a CAGR of +72.1%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 54% against the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mauritius ($X per ton), while Mozambique ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mozambique (+27.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
