By contrast, Democratic Republic of the Congo (-5.2%), Botswana (-15.6%) and Namibia (-15.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Zambia, Angola, Tanzania, Democratic Republic of the Congo and Zimbabwe increased by +10, +7.1, +5, +3.5 and +3.3 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Angola ($X), Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X) and Namibia ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together comprising 61% of total imports. Botswana, Zimbabwe, Zambia and Tanzania lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 24%.

Zambia, with a CAGR of +16.1%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 13% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.4%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the import price increased by 27% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X per ton), while Tanzania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
