Articles Of Zinc Market Size in SADC
The SADC articles of zinc market expanded to $X in 2021, picking up by 5% against the previous year. The total consumption indicated a mild expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the last nine-year period. In value terms, articles of zinc production expanded notably to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total production indicated mild growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production decreased by -5.2% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 25%. Over the period under review, production attained the peak level at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, production remained at a lower figure.
Articles Of Zinc Exports
Exports in SADC
In 2021, overseas shipments of articles of zinc increased by 306% to X tons for the first time since 2013, thus ending a seven-year declining trend. Overall, exports, however, faced a abrupt decrease. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, articles of zinc exports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a deep reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 172%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
South Africa dominates exports structure, accounting for X tons, which was approx. 93% of total exports in 2021. The following exporters - Tanzania (X tons) and Angola (X tons) - together made up 5% of total exports.
Exports from South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -4.0% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Angola (+50.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Angola emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +50.6% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Tanzania (-22.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of South Africa and Angola increased by +44 and +1.6 percentage points, respectively.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest articles of zinc supplier in SADC, comprising 84% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Tanzania ($X), with a 3.4% share of total exports.
In South Africa, articles of zinc exports contracted by an average annual rate of -2.5% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Tanzania (-22.6% per year) and Angola (+60.5% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, falling by -37.9% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, enjoyed mild growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 an increase of 78%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Angola ($X per ton), while South Africa ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Angola (+6.6%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.
Articles Of Zinc Imports
Imports in SADC
After two years of decline, overseas purchases of articles of zinc increased by 89% to X tons in 2021. In general, imports, however, faced a abrupt decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 98%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, articles of zinc imports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, showed a deep slump. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2021, South Africa (X tons) represented the major importer of articles of zinc, comprising 51% of total imports. Zambia (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Namibia (X tons) and Angola (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 29% share of total imports. Botswana (X tons), Zimbabwe (X tons) and Mauritius (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to articles of zinc imports into South Africa stood at -12.7%. At the same time, Mauritius (+26.1%) and Zimbabwe (+21.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mauritius emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +26.1% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Zambia (-4.7%), Namibia (-9.5%), Botswana (-19.3%) and Angola (-29.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Zambia (+10 p.p.), South Africa (+5.3 p.p.), Zimbabwe (+3.3 p.p.), Mauritius (+2.8 p.p.) and Namibia (+2.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Botswana and Angola saw its share reduced by -3.6% and -23.5% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported articles of zinc in SADC, comprising 65% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Angola ($X), with a 7.8% share of total imports. It was followed by Zambia, with a 5.6% share.
In South Africa, articles of zinc imports declined by an average annual rate of -4.7% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Angola (-26.6% per year) and Zambia (-7.9% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, dropping by -2.7% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed notable growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when the import price increased by 143%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Angola ($X per ton), while Zambia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
