Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a deep slump. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, polyethylene glycol wax exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, recorded a deep reduction. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

South Africa dominates exports structure, finishing at X tons, which was near 97% of total exports in 2021. Swaziland (X tons) held a relatively small share of total exports.

Exports from South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -19.6% from 2012 to 2021. Swaziland experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. While the share of Swaziland (+1.9 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest polyethylene glycol wax supplier in SADC, comprising 97% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Swaziland ($X), with a 2.7% share of total exports.

In South Africa, polyethylene glycol wax exports decreased by an average annual rate of -7.4% over the period from 2012-2021.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2021, reducing by -12.3% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, enjoyed a strong expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 192%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Swaziland ($X per ton), while South Africa totaled $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+15.2%).

In 2021, overseas purchases of artificial and prepared waxes of polyethylene glycol decreased by -8.7% to X tons, falling for the third year in a row after two years of growth. In general, imports continue to indicate a abrupt shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 12%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, polyethylene glycol wax imports contracted to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a deep setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 17%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, South Africa (X tons) represented the main importer of artificial and prepared waxes of polyethylene glycol, comprising 68% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Tanzania (X tons), comprising a 21% share of total imports. Malawi (X tons), Zambia (X tons) and Mozambique (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -7.6% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Malawi (+38.9%), Tanzania (+31.2%), Mozambique (+4.8%) and Zambia (+3.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Malawi emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +38.9% from 2012-2021. While the share of Tanzania (+20 p.p.), Malawi (+3.1 p.p.) and Zambia (+1.5 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of South Africa (-12.2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported artificial and prepared waxes of polyethylene glycol in SADC, comprising 75% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Tanzania ($X), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by Malawi, with a 4% share.

In South Africa, polyethylene glycol wax imports shrank by an average annual rate of -6.6% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Tanzania (+24.3% per year) and Malawi (+44.0% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, growing by 5.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when the import price increased by 11%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Malawi ($X per ton), while Zambia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Malawi (+3.7%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
