Artificial guts imports reduced to X tons in 2022, falling by -6.8% on 2021 figures. Over the period under review, imports showed a pronounced shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 25%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, artificial guts imports reduced slightly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports saw a perceptible reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 27%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

South Africa dominates imports structure, reaching X tons, which was approx. 68% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons), comprising a 6.2% share of total imports. The following importers - Swaziland (X tons), Lesotho (X tons), Zimbabwe (X tons), Namibia (X tons), Botswana (X tons), Angola (X tons), Mozambique (X tons) and Zambia (X tons) - together made up 21% of total imports.

Imports into South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -1.4% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Mozambique (+6.5%) and Zimbabwe (+4.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mozambique emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +6.5% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Zambia (-2.4%), Democratic Republic of the Congo (-3.0%), Botswana (-8.2%), Angola (-8.5%), Lesotho (-8.7%), Namibia (-11.9%) and Swaziland (-18.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of South Africa (+18 p.p.) and Zimbabwe (+1.7 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Lesotho (-1.8 p.p.), Namibia (-3.1 p.p.) and Swaziland (-17.2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported artificial guts (sausage skins) in SADC, comprising 78% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X), with a 4.1% share of total imports. It was followed by Angola, with a 3.5% share.

In South Africa, artificial guts imports plunged by an average annual rate of -1.6% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Democratic Republic of the Congo (+2.3% per year) and Angola (+0.2% per year).

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Angola ($X per ton), while Swaziland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mozambique (+9.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
