Circuit Breaker Market Size in SADC

The SADC circuit breaker market shrank to $X in 2022, approximately equating the previous year. The total consumption indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption increased by +6.4% against 2020 indices. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of the market remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Circuit Breaker Production in SADC

In value terms, circuit breaker production reduced slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production recorded a prominent increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 38%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2018 to 2022, production growth remained at a lower figure.

Circuit Breaker Exports

Exports in SADC

In 2022, overseas shipments of automatic circuit breakers increased by 3% to X units, rising for the third year in a row after three years of decline. Overall, exports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 51%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X units. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, circuit breaker exports fell slightly to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated temperate growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +41.1% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 53%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

The shipments of the two major exporters of automatic circuit breakers, namely South Africa and Lesotho, represented more than two-thirds of total export.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by Lesotho (with a CAGR of +9.2%).

In value terms, the largest circuit breaker supplying countries in SADC were South Africa ($X) and Lesotho ($X).

Lesotho, with a CAGR of +6.6%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in SADC stood at $X per unit in 2022, falling by -6.2% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.2%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 25% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per unit, and then dropped in the following year.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per unit), while Lesotho totaled $X per unit.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+2.7%).

Circuit Breaker Imports

Imports in SADC

In 2022, circuit breaker imports in SADC rose markedly to X units, surging by 9.4% compared with the year before. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 22% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the near future.

In value terms, circuit breaker imports expanded remarkably to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 18% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

South Africa dominates imports structure, finishing at X units, which was approx. 57% of total imports in 2022. Tanzania (X units) held a 7.9% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Mozambique (7.3%), Angola (5.8%) and Zimbabwe (5.1%). The following importers - Namibia (X units) and Zambia (X units) - each finished at a 5.7% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to circuit breaker imports into South Africa stood at +4.4%. At the same time, Tanzania (+16.7%), Zimbabwe (+7.4%), Zambia (+4.4%) and Namibia (+3.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Tanzania emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +16.7% from 2012-2022. Angola and Mozambique experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. Tanzania (+5.4 p.p.) and South Africa (+2.3 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Angola and Mozambique saw its share reduced by -2.3% and -3% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported automatic circuit breakers in SADC, comprising 62% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Mozambique ($X), with a 7% share of total imports. It was followed by Tanzania, with a 4.3% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa totaled -2.0%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Mozambique (+6.0% per year) and Tanzania (+5.6% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per unit, approximately mirroring the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a noticeable descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the import price increased by 21%. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per unit), while Tanzania ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mozambique (+5.5%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
