As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, bacon and ham exports surged to $X in 2022. Overall, exports posted a mild increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 74% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

South Africa prevails in exports structure, accounting for X tons, which was near 98% of total exports in 2022. Namibia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

South Africa was also the fastest-growing in terms of the bacon, ham and other dried, salted or smoked pig meat exports, with a CAGR of +2.2% from 2012 to 2022. Namibia (-18.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of South Africa (+14 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Namibia (-13.8 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest bacon and ham supplier in SADC, comprising 96% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Namibia ($X), with a 3.7% share of total exports.

In 2022, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year. In general, the export price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 an increase of 41%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Namibia ($X per ton), while South Africa totaled $X per ton.

Bacon and ham imports fell to X tons in 2022, which is down by -6.8% against the previous year. In general, imports showed a abrupt decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 24% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, bacon and ham imports rose markedly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports saw a abrupt descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when imports increased by 29%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Angola (X tons) represented the largest importer of bacon, ham and other dried, salted or smoked pig meat, generating 50% of total imports. Mozambique (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Seychelles (X tons), South Africa (X tons) and Namibia (X tons). All these countries together took near 33% share of total imports. The following importers - Tanzania (X tons) and Mauritius (X tons) - each resulted at a 7.2% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to bacon and ham imports into Angola stood at -7.5%. At the same time, Seychelles (+18.2%) and Mozambique (+8.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Seychelles emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +18.2% from 2012-2022. Mauritius experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Namibia (-4.8%), South Africa (-6.2%) and Tanzania (-19.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Seychelles (+8.6 p.p.), Mozambique (+8.6 p.p.) and Mauritius (+1.7 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Angola (-8.5 p.p.) and Tanzania (-12.9 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Angola ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported bacon, ham and other dried, salted or smoked pig meat in SADC, comprising 40% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by South Africa ($X), with a 17% share of total imports. It was followed by Seychelles, with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Angola amounted to -11.3%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: South Africa (-3.8% per year) and Seychelles (+19.4% per year).

Import Prices by Country
