Bearing Market Size in SADC

In 2021, the SADC bearing market was finally on the rise to reach $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, consumption saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, bearing production reached $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 33% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, production remained at a lower figure.

Exports in SADC

In 2021, the amount of ball and roller bearings exported in SADC skyrocketed to X tons, jumping by 34% compared with 2020 figures. Overall, exports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 36% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, bearing exports soared to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, showed a noticeable decrease. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2021, South Africa (X tons) was the largest exporter of ball and roller bearings in SADC, comprising 96% of total export.

South Africa experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of ball and roller bearings. While the share of South Africa (+2.2 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) also remains the largest bearing supplier in SADC.

In South Africa, bearing exports shrank by an average annual rate of -4.0% over the period from 2012-2021.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2021, which is down by -13.8% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a noticeable contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the export price increased by 6.3%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for South Africa.

From 2012 to 2021, the rate of growth in terms of prices for South Africa amounted to -3.4% per year.

Bearing Imports

Imports in SADC

After two years of decline, supplies from abroad of ball and roller bearings increased by 37% to X tons in 2021. In general, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, bearing imports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, saw a noticeable shrinkage. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

South Africa represented the main importing country with an import of about X tons, which finished at 53% of total imports. Angola (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 22% share, followed by Tanzania (6.3%) and Zimbabwe (6.1%). The following importers - Zambia (X tons), Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons) and Madagascar (X tons) - together made up 6.9% of total imports.

South Africa experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of ball and roller bearings. At the same time, Angola (+12.1%), Zimbabwe (+6.9%) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (+5.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Angola emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +12.1% from 2012-2021. Madagascar and Zambia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Tanzania (-6.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Angola (+14 p.p.) and Zimbabwe (+2.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Tanzania and South Africa saw its share reduced by -5.7% and -8% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported ball and roller bearings in SADC, comprising 76% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Zambia ($X), with a 4% share of total imports. It was followed by Tanzania, with a 3.7% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa amounted to -1.4%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Zambia (-2.4% per year) and Tanzania (-4.4% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2021, declining by -5.6% against the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a perceptible reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when the import price increased by 24% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Angola ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tanzania (+1.9%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
