Bambara Bean Market Size in SADC
The SADC bambara bean market rose modestly to $X in 2022, picking up by 3% against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, showed a mild downturn. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.
Bambara Bean Production in SADC
In value terms, bambara bean production stood at $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, showed a pronounced reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 44% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.
The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were Zimbabwe (X tons), Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons) and Zambia (X tons), together accounting for 93% of total production.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Zambia (with a CAGR of +3.2%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In 2022, the average bambara bean yield in SADC was estimated at X kg per ha, leveling off at the year before. Over the period under review, the yield, however, showed a slight setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 6.2% against the previous year. The level of yield peaked at X kg per ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
In 2022, the total area harvested in terms of bambara beans production in SADC amounted to X ha, leveling off at the year before. The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 11% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to bambara bean production attained the peak figure at X ha in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the harvested area failed to regain momentum.
Bambara Bean Exports
Exports in SADC
In 2022, the amount of bambara beans exported in SADC declined markedly to X tons, waning by -38.9% compared with the previous year. In general, exports, however, recorded buoyant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 200% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2021, and then dropped rapidly in the following year.
In value terms, bambara bean exports reduced dramatically to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 323%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X, and then contracted notably in the following year.
Exports by Country
Madagascar (X tons) and Malawi (X tons) prevails in exports structure, together mixing up 90% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Zambia (X tons), generating a 7.1% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Malawi (with a CAGR of +27.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Malawi ($X) remains the largest bambara bean supplier in SADC, comprising 66% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Madagascar ($X), with a 31% share of total exports.
In Malawi, bambara bean exports expanded at an average annual rate of +45.5% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Madagascar (+11.6% per year) and Zambia (-7.2% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, dropping by -3.5% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, enjoyed a resilient increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the export price increased by 83% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then contracted slightly in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Malawi ($X per ton), while Zambia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Malawi (+14.4%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.
Bambara Bean Imports
Imports in SADC
In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in purchases abroad of bambara beans, when their volume decreased by -36.2% to X tons. Over the period under review, imports, however, posted a resilient expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when imports increased by 161%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2021, and then reduced markedly in the following year.
In value terms, bambara bean imports declined markedly to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, posted strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 153%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then reduced rapidly in the following year.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons) represented the key importer of bambara beans, constituting 58% of total imports. Botswana (X tons) held a 15% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by South Africa (14%). The following importers - Swaziland (X tons) and Zimbabwe (X tons) - together made up 7.1% of total imports.
Imports into Democratic Republic of the Congo increased at an average annual rate of +47.4% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, South Africa (+71.7%) and Botswana (+20.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, South Africa emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +71.7% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Swaziland (-5.2%) and Zimbabwe (-8.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Democratic Republic of the Congo (+54 p.p.), Botswana (+15 p.p.) and South Africa (+14 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Swaziland and Zimbabwe saw its share reduced by -22.1% and -25% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.
In value terms, Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported bambara beans in SADC, comprising 79% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by South Africa ($X), with a 6.5% share of total imports. It was followed by Swaziland, with a 4.7% share.
In Democratic Republic of the Congo, bambara bean imports expanded at an average annual rate of +49.9% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: South Africa (+63.5% per year) and Swaziland (-11.9% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -2% against the previous year. In general, the import price recorded a noticeable shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the import price increased by 25% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X per ton), while Zimbabwe ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
