In 2021, the SADC barbed wire market increased by 9.1% to $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, consumption, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 40% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X, and then fell in the following year.

Barbed wire exports surged to X tons in 2021, growing by 17% on 2020 figures. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 70%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, barbed wire exports expanded slightly to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 42% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

South Africa prevails in exports structure, finishing at X tons, which was approx. 97% of total exports in 2021. Angola (X tons) took a relatively small share of total exports.

South Africa experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of barbed wire and entanglements. At the same time, Angola (+89.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Angola emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +89.7% from 2012-2021. While the share of Angola (+1.6 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest barbed wire supplier in SADC, comprising 98% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Angola ($X), with a 0.6% share of total exports.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -12% against the previous year. Overall, the export price continues to indicate a slight slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when the export price increased by 43%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2020, and then declined in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Angola amounted to $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (-1.2%).

In 2021, overseas purchases of barbed wire and entanglements were finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a slight contraction. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, barbed wire imports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, recorded a slight downturn. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Mozambique (X tons), distantly followed by Zimbabwe (X tons), Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons), Botswana (X tons) and Tanzania (X tons) were the key importers of barbed wire and entanglements, together generating 77% of total imports. Swaziland (X tons), Angola (X tons), Zambia (X tons), South Africa (X tons), Madagascar (X tons), Namibia (X tons) and Lesotho (X tons) held a minor share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Democratic Republic of the Congo (with a CAGR of +23.2%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Mozambique ($X), Zimbabwe ($X) and Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together comprising 60% of total imports.

Among the main importing countries, Democratic Republic of the Congo, with a CAGR of +21.9%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 16% against the previous year. Overall, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when the import price increased by 19% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Swaziland ($X per ton), while South Africa ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
