The SADC basic dye market soared to $X in 2021, jumping by 29% against the previous year. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Basic Dye Production in SADC

In value terms, basic dye production expanded sharply to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a measured increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production decreased by -5.6% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the production volume increased by 28%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.

Exports in SADC

In 2021, basic dye exports in SADC dropped remarkably to X tons, falling by -56.8% against the previous year. Overall, exports continue to indicate a abrupt descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 80%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, basic dye exports dropped dramatically to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a abrupt curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 49% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

South Africa represented the key exporting country with an export of about X tons, which finished at 65% of total exports. Zambia (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 24% share, followed by Swaziland (7.8%). Mauritius (X kg) held a minor share of total exports.

Exports from South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -19.6% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Zambia (+64.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Zambia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +64.5% from 2012-2021. Mauritius experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Swaziland (-2.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Zambia (+24 p.p.), Swaziland (+5.8 p.p.) and Mauritius (+1.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while South Africa saw its share reduced by -32.4% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest basic dye supplier in SADC, comprising 74% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Zambia ($X), with an 18% share of total exports. It was followed by Swaziland, with a 6.2% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa stood at -16.3%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Zambia (+87.7% per year) and Swaziland (-15.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 21% against the previous year. Export price indicated a modest increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 64%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Zambia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Zambia (+14.1%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in SADC

Basic dye imports soared to X tons in 2021, with an increase of 108% on 2020 figures. Overall, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, basic dye imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a slight decrease. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Angola (X tons) and South Africa (X tons) prevails in imports structure, together generating 80% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Mauritius (X tons) and Tanzania (X tons), together committing a 9.8% share of total imports. Madagascar (X tons) and Zambia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Mauritius (with a CAGR of +25.4%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, South Africa ($X), Angola ($X) and Madagascar ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together accounting for 86% of total imports. Mauritius, Tanzania and Zambia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 8.9%.

Mauritius, with a CAGR of +12.3%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2021, shrinking by -12.2% against the previous year. In general, the import price continues to indicate a mild slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the import price increased by 24% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Madagascar ($X per ton), while Tanzania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
