In 2022, shipments abroad of bed linen of knitted or crocheted textiles increased by 81% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after six years of decline. Over the period under review, exports, however, faced a abrupt curtailment. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, exports of bed linen of knitted or crocheted textiles soared to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, recorded a drastic downturn. Over the period under review, the exports of reached the peak figure at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

South Africa was the major exporter of bed linen of knitted or crocheted textiles in SADC, with the volume of exports amounting to X tons, which was near 69% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Mauritius (X tons), making up a 22% share of total exports. The following exporters - Namibia (X tons) and Zambia (X tons) - each resulted at a 3.2% share of total exports.

South Africa experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of bed linen of knitted or crocheted textiles. At the same time, Zambia (+13.5%) and Mauritius (+13.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Zambia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +13.5% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Namibia (-38.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of South Africa (+44 p.p.) and Mauritius (+20 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Namibia (-65.8 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest bed linen of knitted or crocheted textiles supplier in SADC, comprising 84% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Mauritius ($X), with a 9.6% share of total exports. It was followed by Namibia, with a 0.8% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa totaled -1.8%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Mauritius (+16.9% per year) and Namibia (-41.6% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, waning by -6.3% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 64% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Mauritius ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mauritius (+3.1%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas purchases of bed linen of knitted or crocheted textiles, when their volume decreased by -14% to X tons. Overall, imports, however, enjoyed strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 207% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports of hit record highs at X tons in 2021, and then fell in the following year.

In value terms, imports of bed linen of knitted or crocheted textiles fell sharply to $X in 2022. In general, imports saw a noticeable contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 85% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then plummeted in the following year.

Imports by Country

Mozambique prevails in textiles structure, amounting to X tons, which was near 87% of total imports in 2022. Madagascar (X tons), Botswana (X tons) and South Africa (X tons) took a little share of total imports.

Mozambique was also the fastest-growing in terms of the bed linen of knitted or crocheted textiles imports, with a CAGR of +72.3% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Madagascar (+26.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Botswana (-5.4%) and South Africa (-14.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. The second position in the ranking was held by Madagascar ($X), with a 13% share of total imports. It was followed by South Africa, with a 12% share.

In Mozambique, imports of bed linen of knitted or crocheted textiles increased at an average annual rate of +40.1% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Madagascar (+29.1% per year) and South Africa (-10.2% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, waning by -28% against the previous year. In general, the import price showed a abrupt descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the import price increased by 18% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Mozambique ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+5.1%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
