Beer Market Size in SADC

The SADC beer market declined slightly to $X in 2022, waning by -1.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption showed a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the market remained at a lower figure.

Beer Production in SADC

In value terms, beer production fell modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production continues to indicate a slight decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the production volume increased by 36% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2014 to 2022, production growth failed to regain momentum.

Exports in SADC

Beer exports rose notably to X tons in 2022, picking up by 6.8% compared with the previous year's figure. In general, exports, however, saw a mild reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 36%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, beer exports stood at $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a noticeable decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 59%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

South Africa was the major exporting country with an export of around X tons, which accounted for 68% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Namibia (X tons), creating a 29% share of total exports.

South Africa was also the fastest-growing in terms of the beer exports, with a CAGR of +8.6% from 2012 to 2022. Namibia (-9.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of South Africa (+42 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Namibia (-40.3 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest beer supplier in SADC, comprising 64% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Namibia ($X), with a 32% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa amounted to +6.8%.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2022, dropping by -4.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed a slight reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the export price increased by 22% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Namibia ($X per ton), while South Africa stood at $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Namibia (-0.3%).

Beer Imports

Imports in SADC

In 2022, beer imports in SADC surged to X tons, with an increase of 17% on the previous year's figure. Total imports indicated pronounced growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +30.8% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 49%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, beer imports declined to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a noticeable downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 32% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Botswana represented the main importer of beer in SADC, with the volume of imports resulting at X tons, which was near 42% of total imports in 2022. South Africa (X tons) held a 21% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Zambia (8.7%), Angola (7.4%) and Mozambique (5.7%). Tanzania (X tons) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Botswana (with a CAGR of +32.5%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported beer in SADC, comprising 39% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Angola ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by Botswana, with a 13% share.

In South Africa, beer imports shrank by an average annual rate of -2.4% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Angola (-14.3% per year) and Botswana (+12.5% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -20.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw a abrupt slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 an increase of 11%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Botswana ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Angola (+1.1%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
