In 2022, the SADC beet-pulp and bagasse market was finally on the rise to reach $X for the first time since 2017, thus ending a four-year declining trend. In value terms, beet-pulp and bagasse production shrank modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when the production volume increased by 17% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production attained the peak level at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in SADC
In 2022, shipments abroad of beet-pulp and bagasse decreased by -16.9% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. Over the period under review, exports saw a deep reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by 117% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, beet-pulp and bagasse exports reduced to $X in 2022. Overall, exports saw a abrupt contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when exports increased by 162%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
In 2022, South Africa (X tons) was the major exporter of beet-pulp and bagasse, comprising 73% of total exports. Mozambique (X tons) took a 15% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Namibia (12%).
Exports from South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +25.6% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Namibia (+34.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Namibia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +34.7% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Mozambique (-24.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of South Africa and Namibia increased by +70 and +12 percentage points, respectively.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest beet-pulp and bagasse supplier in SADC, comprising 86% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Mozambique ($X), with an 8.5% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa amounted to +18.4%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Mozambique (-25.2% per year) and Namibia (+40.3% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 11% against the previous year. Export price indicated a tangible expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, beet-pulp and bagasse export price increased by +56.2% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the export price increased by 76% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Namibia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Namibia (+4.1%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
Beet-Pulp And Bagasse Imports
Imports in SADC
After six years of growth, purchases abroad of beet-pulp and bagasse decreased by -3.7% to X tons in 2022. Overall, imports, however, showed a prominent expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 79% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2021, and then fell modestly in the following year.
In value terms, beet-pulp and bagasse imports contracted to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed temperate growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 41%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.
Imports by Country
Swaziland (X tons) and South Africa (X tons) dominates imports structure, together generating 94% of total imports. The following importers - Mozambique (X tons) and Mauritius (X tons) - each reached a 4.2% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Swaziland (with a CAGR of +49.4%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported beet-pulp and bagasse in SADC, comprising 69% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Swaziland ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by Mauritius, with a 5.1% share.
In South Africa, beet-pulp and bagasse imports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Swaziland (+41.4% per year) and Mauritius (+3.1% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2022, falling by -9.2% against the previous year. Overall, the import price saw a deep reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the import price increased by 22%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mauritius ($X per ton), while Swaziland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
