In 2021, the SADC wood bending machine market decreased by -2% to $X for the first time since 2013, thus ending a seven-year rising trend. Overall, consumption, however, continues to indicate a perceptible increase. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2020, and then dropped slightly in the following year.

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 11,179% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X units. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, wood bending machine exports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

In 2021, South Africa (X units) was the major exporter of bending or assembling machines, mixing up 69% of total exports. Tanzania (X units) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Mozambique (X units). All these countries together held near 25% share of total exports. The following exporters - Botswana (X units), Mauritius (X units), Namibia (X units) and Zambia (X units) - each finished at a 6.6% share of total exports.

Exports from South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Tanzania (+31.8%) and Mozambique (+13.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Tanzania emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +31.8% from 2012-2021. Mauritius experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Zambia (-7.4%), Botswana (-20.6%) and Namibia (-27.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of South Africa (+55 p.p.), Tanzania (+19 p.p.) and Mozambique (+4.5 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Botswana (-1.8 p.p.) and Namibia (-6.2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest wood bending machine supplier in SADC, comprising 98% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Zambia ($X), with a 0.5% share of total exports. It was followed by Tanzania, with a 0.5% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa stood at +5.4%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Zambia (-3.1% per year) and Tanzania (+24.9% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in SADC stood at $X per unit in 2021, picking up by 205% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 5,415%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per unit), while Tanzania ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Botswana (+23.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in SADC

After two years of growth, supplies from abroad of bending or assembling machines decreased by -14.2% to X units in 2021. Overall, imports saw a abrupt contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 72%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X units in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, wood bending machine imports contracted notably to $X in 2021. In general, imports saw a abrupt setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 96% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then reduced remarkably in the following year.

Imports by Country

South Africa dominates imports structure, accounting for X units, which was approx. 78% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Mauritius (X units), comprising a 7.8% share of total imports. The following importers - Tanzania (X units), Mozambique (X units), Namibia (X units) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (X units) - together made up 10% of total imports.

Imports into South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -10.3% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Mozambique (+44.8%), Namibia (+29.9%), Mauritius (+25.4%) and Tanzania (+15.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mozambique emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +44.8% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Democratic Republic of the Congo (-13.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Mauritius (+7.3 p.p.), Mozambique (+3.1 p.p.), Tanzania (+2.9 p.p.) and Namibia (+2.3 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of South Africa (-15.8 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported bending or assembling machines in SADC, comprising 43% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Namibia ($X), with a 19% share of total imports. It was followed by Tanzania, with a 13% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa amounted to -12.1%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Namibia (+25.8% per year) and Tanzania (+17.2% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in SADC stood at $X per unit in 2021, dropping by -37.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, enjoyed measured growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the import price increased by 241%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per unit. From 2019 to 2021, the import prices remained at a lower figure.
