In 2022, the SADC berry market decreased by X% to $X, falling for the third year in a row after two years of growth. Over the period under review, consumption recorded a deep contraction. Berry Production in SADC

In value terms, berry production shrank to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of X% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the production volume increased by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production attained the peak level at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

South Africa (X tons) remains the largest berry producing country in SADC, accounting for X% of total volume. Moreover, berry production in South Africa exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Zimbabwe (X tons), sixfold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume in South Africa stood at X%.

The average berry yield expanded markedly to X tons per ha in 2022, increasing by X% on the year before. Overall, the yield saw a relatively flat trend pattern. For the ninth consecutive year, SADC recorded growth in overseas shipments of berries, which increased by X% to X tons in 2022. In general, exports continue to indicate a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by X% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, berry exports expanded markedly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports showed significant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of X%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

South Africa represented the key exporting country with an export of about X tons, which resulted at X% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Zimbabwe (X tons), creating an X% share of total exports.

South Africa was also the fastest-growing in terms of the berries exports, with a CAGR of X% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Zimbabwe (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. South Africa (X p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Zimbabwe saw its share reduced by X% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest berry supplier in SADC, comprising X% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Zimbabwe ($X), with a X% share of total exports.

In 2022, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in purchases abroad of berries, when their volume increased by X% to X tons. Overall, imports posted a temperate increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of X% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, berry imports soared to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports saw measured growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of X%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

South Africa represented the major importer of berries in SADC, with the volume of imports resulting at X tons, which was approx. X% of total imports in 2022. Mauritius (X tons) took a X% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Namibia (X%) and Botswana (X%). Angola (X tons), Mozambique (X tons), Lesotho (X tons) and Seychelles (X tons) took a little share of total imports.

South Africa experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of berries. At the same time, Mozambique (X%), Mauritius (X%), Lesotho (X%) and Botswana (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mozambique emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of X% from 2012-2022. Namibia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Angola (X%) and Seychelles (X%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Mauritius (X p.p.) and Mozambique (X p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Angola (X p.p.), Namibia (X p.p.) and South Africa (X p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X), Mauritius ($X) and Namibia ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined X% share of total imports. Botswana, Mozambique, Seychelles, Angola and Lesotho lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further X%.

Mozambique, with a CAGR of X%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by X% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of X%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of X%. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in the near future.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Seychelles ($X per ton), while Lesotho ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
