In 2021, the SADC coloured pencil lead market was finally on the rise to reach $X for the first time since 2016, thus ending a four-year declining trend. In 2021, the amount of black or coloured pencil leads exported in SADC expanded sharply to X units, picking up by 14% compared with 2020 figures. Overall, exports, however, saw a slight descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 42%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X units in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, coloured pencil lead exports soared to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.3% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 84% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The biggest shipments were from South Africa (X units), together reaching 98% of total export.

South Africa was also the fastest-growing in terms of the black or coloured pencil leads exports, with a CAGR of -1.1% from 2012 to 2021. The shares of the largest exporters remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) also remains the largest coloured pencil lead supplier in SADC.

In 2021, purchases abroad of black or coloured pencil leads was finally on the rise to reach X units for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In general, imports, however, recorded a noticeable setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 27% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X units. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, coloured pencil lead imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a noticeable downturn. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, South Africa (X units), distantly followed by Namibia (X units), Botswana (X units), Malawi (X units), Seychelles (X units) and Swaziland (X units) were the major importers of black or coloured pencil leads, together creating 83% of total imports. Mauritius (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Malawi (with a CAGR of +48.2%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported black or coloured pencil leads in SADC, comprising 38% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Namibia ($X), with an 18% share of total imports. It was followed by Botswana, with a 14% share.

The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 an increase of 28%. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per unit), while Malawi ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Namibia (+12.0%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
