South Africa prevails in exports structure, accounting for X tons, which was approx. 95% of total exports in 2022. Mauritius (X tons) held a little share of total exports.
Exports from South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -4.6% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Mauritius (+14.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mauritius emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +14.7% from 2012-2022. Mauritius (+3.4 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest black printing ink supplier in SADC, comprising 95% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Mauritius ($X), with a 2.3% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa amounted to -4.4%.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 1.5% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 31% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Mauritius totaled $X per ton.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mauritius (+2.6%).

Imports in SADC
Black printing ink imports reduced to X tons in 2022, declining by -1.7% compared with the previous year. In general, imports continue to indicate a perceptible downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 22% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, black printing ink imports totaled $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 34%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
South Africa represented the main importer of black printing ink in SADC, with the volume of imports recording X tons, which was near 67% of total imports in 2022. Angola (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Tanzania (X tons). All these countries together held near 18% share of total imports. The following importers - Madagascar (X tons), Namibia (X tons), Malawi (X tons) and Zambia (X tons) - each reached an 8.1% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to black printing ink imports into South Africa stood at -6.4%. At the same time, Angola (+25.4%), Malawi (+5.5%) and Madagascar (+4.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Angola emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +25.4% from 2012-2022. Namibia and Zambia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Tanzania (-2.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Angola increased by +11 percentage points. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported black printing ink in SADC, comprising 68% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Angola ($X), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by Tanzania, with a 7% share.
In South Africa, black printing ink imports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Angola (+13.2% per year) and Tanzania (+9.3% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 15% against the previous year. Import price indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, black printing ink import price decreased by -3.6% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 27% against the previous year.
